MB C 180 (w203)

The guy who is coming to me tomorow has told me on the phone that he comes from a mechanical background so i can ask him, after markjay's post sugesting that it could pipe etc.i am so glad that i did not go to halfords and get some power stearing porridege best wait for the profesional. since joining this site i have learnt so much that in my hands could be dangerous so proced with caution shall be my mechanical moto in the future .

Tow things to note...

If power steering fluid, this is most likley to be a loose hose clamp, or split hose, though a leaking PS pump is not impossible. Worth weighting all the hose clamps first....

superb

will go and have a look at clamps and hoses now thanks for info:thumb:

looks like a job for a plumber

Found a leak at the junctun of the radiator and a metal pipe, the diog guy said that the gearbox shared the radiator for cooling the oil(gearbox) so the diagnosis showed transmition slip, intermitent he added so a drop in gearbox oil is not to good so i think that will answer one of my previous questions? limp mode is just for getting home you should not drive glad i parked up when i did.So spot on and thanks to markjay off to search the threads for fix tips etc.

There is a known issue of leak from transmission oil cooler (located, as you said, inside the radiator) on cars fitted with Valeo radiators (google 'Valeo' and 'Mercedes'...), where the coolant leaks into the transmission diluting the ATF and destroying the auto-box in the process. Due to the higher pressure in the coolant system the coolant escapes into the auto-box.. leading to a very expensive repair.

But if this was the case then I would not expect this leak to be external, i.e. you should not see anything under the car.

If all you have is a leak from the oil cooler onto the pavement then this is not so bad, as long as the leak is sorted.

Yes this seems to be the case the leak is at the junction of the metal pipe where it joins the radiator the top one not sure if the bottom one is leaking.found a quick fix option late last night so will find and web adress to post. finding loads of info now i know what i am looking at, still not sure about finding vin or chassis numbers info seems that i dont have a 722.6 gearbox even when the diog.guy told me i did:wallbash:

thanks to jimbob I now have all the dtc codes de-coded although some of the codes from diferent sites do not match the benzworld site did seem to have a very comprensive list of codes also yahoo seem to have another take on p220a and that I need a conductor plate and this is a common fault another answer is the speed comparison of y3/6n2 toy3/6n3 is implausable but as I need to get as much info as is possible I shall join benzworld and ask the same questions to see what help I can get .I have a few pages of meanings of codes now so a few more for my mechanic to cast his expert eyes over will not hurt then he can sort the wheat from the chaff ,hope he can see through chaff as i am sure there will be some rubbish there seems no shortage on this tinternet.

The Y3 fault points to the gearbox electroplate, but you really need someone with Merc experience/ pertinent diagnostic tool to be sure.

Circa £350-£450 inc an oil change at an independent garage.

If you are not inclined to drive the car far, this firm is a mobile near you.

web adress for diy bodge radiator seal to oil pipe

Found this bit of diy bodgeery look likes it might get someone out of trouble my main concern would be you dont change the oil and at that point it seems to give you a chance to see what condition the oil in the sump is clean away debris(hope not) and lets not forget changeing the oil filter.Lets hope that someone with mechanical knowledge will explain the pro's and cons to us .:cool:DIY:W203 radiator R&R - MBWorld.org Forums p.s first link posted ever shame it is a bodge but will do the same for the proper fix when found as this will be my path :thumb:

Do you have experience or had with prestige car diagnostics do they have a star machine. The first post from black55 i received informed i need a man with a star, a sherrif. I am presuming that i have found my prob and that i shall be able to fix it correctly myself with help.if i get it to a professional with star would they be able to tell if the gearbox is knackerd

The situation is more than likely:

1. You have a fault pertaining to the gearbox
2. You cannot be sure as to what the fault is
3. The fault is lilely to be electronics related, thus star diagnostics or similar will wipe away any ambiguity at a stroke
4. The gearbox almost certainly doesn't need replacing based on what you have said thus far - just an ancilliary component
4a. If it is the electroplate, you don't really want to be doing this on your driveway as it is a messy enough job on a ramp
5. Going to an independent like the one I suggested in my earlier post (who comes highly reccomemded by a friend of mine - and I believe has a star machine) will save you time, money and worry in the long run
6. You will then have your fully functioning car back
7. No police force/ sheriff required.

could it be so simple

Hi,Thanks for your input, I have decided to fix the leak in the junction of the ATF cooler pipe and valeo rad hope it will be the o ring then fill the trans through the dip pipe. Before i undertake this and although the diog guy with autologic reader looked at the screen and told me i did have a 722.6 trans. From other posts i gather i can check this with my vin no. WDC 203035 2R 032101 3 there are no 722.6 's does this mean all the info below is not valid. If i can get the car working it will give me a breathing space with transport to decide weather to get the upgrade for the valeo rad or upgrade the car .first things first to get this one running(cross fingers)that i do not have to do the upgrade now.

You will need a dipstick to check the oil level if you are filling the box. Are you saying that you wish to change the Valeo rad? I would concentrate on fixing the current fault first.

Thanks Richard

Hi,I am going to fix the leak first as i hope that will get me going. If not i will have to replace the rad,ATF,FILTER ,etc.I think that it might be "a bridge to far" in respect of my skills on the plus side my sons friend has offered the use of a pit. My feeling at the moment is that I should go to a garage to get this done £500 aprox.I am in doubt as weather to keep the car or not.I have loved driving my merc for the past four years. As my circumstances have changed I will be looking at a newer diesel models, whilst spending time on this forum my interest has grown and a bit of mid life crisis involved so i am going to investigate AMG:devil:.Thanks again off to order dipstick.o rings and plastic sealing tag.

Euge,

All understood. I'm still a bit none the wiser as to why you are planning to replace the rad.

Cat Litter to soak up oil

Got the parts from mercs in watford the oil from halfords and the dipstick from e-bay .I undid the union under the v belt to help remove the top pipe to the rad (acess to o ring).the bottom one was left connected to transmition.pipe.Every thing seemed fine so i started her up full of confidence all seemed fine untill i saw oil at my feet:doh: on inspection the oil appeares to be coming from between the two road sheilds.I am presuming that I have done some damage to the pipe under the sheild.the guy at the parts dept in watford gave me a print out of the rad and pipes but it has no other details if the pipe runs behind something or is not a fesible fix.So i need to put the car on ramps a friend has lent me to get the sheilds off to see what i have damaged:crazy:.

I would replace the valeo rad if i want to keep the car as markjay showed me (post no.27) could be to expensive not to or am i looking for problems. as sugested by Richard get the current fault sorted out then think about rad or more.

best place to lift

Hi,Is there a place i can jack up the car to put ramps under. If i use the merc jacking points i will have to lift it higher to compensate for the suspention travel.

Parts gateway

Hi, i have just received a quote from parts gateway for a oil cooler pipe £30 and £18 delivery but i have not told them what pipe and from what i can make out there is two metal pipes and two flexi/metal pipes to the oil cooler(rad).

Euge.
