MB Direct

MB direct dont tend to prepare cars very well prior to purchase.. however you can negotiate with them..

a few years back i bought my mum a C220 CDI, it was a bit rough around the edges... infact it looked like it had been sitting in the corner of the compound for months.. spider webs, mould on rubber etc..

however i negotiated park sensors, a full leather retrim and wheel refurb and i got the car at less than trade value with warranty.

When the car was handed over (one week late) it looked immaculate, and i mean like brand new.

but be cheeky with your negotiations.. it took me three visits to get the deal i wanted.

Mine looks just like that after a couple of days of not being used!

MB Direct told me (and I've seen other comments about this) that they move the cars *very* quickly - anything that sticks is sent to auction in short order. When I got my car, I'd originally gone for a C220, but that had sold within the week it came in, but they had an identical C270 and I've been glad I ended up with the 5 cyl car.

The Auctions are great places to buy from and I used to have an account with BCA

Their special bank of Scotland sales are very good with huge savings

I bought from MB Direct in Birmingham - got the car unseen:eek: and had it delivered - just under 2 years old (so still under full manufacturers warranty - I felt that made a difference and I'm not sure I would have bought unseen without it) and about 32k on the clock. There were a couple of chips/scratches to be dealt with, which the salesman had said he would do before delivery and hadn't - but to be fair, they didn't quibble about sorting it out, came to collect the car, left me a courtesy vehicle and would have dropped the car back to me had I not been passing them at about the right time. I live about 120 miles away.

Overall the experience was OK - as others have said, the premises ain't grand, but the discounts are - definitely look to buy before month/quarter ends, it makes a huge difference. Whilst it's very nice sitting in the cafe at my local showroom sipping espresso, you do have to remember that you are paying for it, and on balance I think I'm happy for my salesman to have a less than glitzy office if it means I pay a couple of grand less for the car.

Perhaps a cheeky question, but how much did you sell it for?

To be honest not much less than that, they're making very little out of it.

Hi Robert,

bit late in the thread but I purchased our car when it was 18mths old from MB Direct and have had no problems. The clincher was the outstanding price compared to a dealer forecourt. Premises were a bit ropey and there is definitely a feeling of 'stack em high sell em cheap'.
When I saw the car on the website with no pic or mileage I smelt a rat however there was no pic as it was still with it's then current owner and they genuinely didn't know the mileage. When I saw the car it was fine and all was OK.
It is now out of warranty and luxuriating under the cover of Service Plus from my local dealer which I personally think is worth it's weight in gold. Not cheap but there are no sudden shocks at the service counter.

Hope this is useful

That reminds me of a magazine article Quentin Wilson wrote years ago, if I remember correctly, he said the Bank Of Scotland would buy a large fleet of Mondeos in one order from Ford. List price at the time would be £12,000 but they would get them for £8,000, at 10 months old they would be sent to auction and average £9,000 each. Cheap motoring if you have the muscle of a large business.

Yes; when I drive past I look in trepidation but then get put off by all the "wide boys" turning up with their car trailers :D And they wear light brown jackets with furry collars
As my old sergeant used to say, "A car auction is a great place to off load a car, but not a safe place to buy one."

I am positive there are bargains to be had, but there are also gullible buyers that get 'had'. Just remember all those 'Wide Boys' will probably be bidding until the car stops being a profitable purchase.

Regards
John
