Bit of a distress call here!

I've come into possession (legally and in line with the DVLA's rules) of an abandoned 1980V 450 SLC. It was left in the underground car park beneath my flat for about two years and is covered in dust. It was left open and was full of various receipts etc showing that between 2005 and 2007 it had over £5K spent on it and had an MOT until Sept 07. It seems in reasonably good nick, although there are some bits of rust starting to show around the real wheel arches and the edge of the boot lid. For a vehicle that's been standing for at least 18 months is not too bad at all! I've contacted MB and am awaiting replacement keys (only £22 - saves on replacing the locks!) so I don't even know if it will start! There was also loads of history in the car (including the original hand book and service history). It's covered 147K according to the clock (and receipts)

I've always been interested in cars and always wanted an R107 model (would have fitted right in at the Naval College) but didn't want to risk it all on an expensive classic! Getting the SLC back on the road is going to be a fairly long term project and learning experience. If anyones got any tips on where to get parts from, any recommendations for services that will be required or even any good contacts in the Glasgow area, please let me know!

The one thing that does worry is, if it recently had so much money spent on it, why has it been abandoned?? Could it require a very hefty repair resulting from a catastrophic failure? (i.e. engine blown etc).

Any comments welcomed!

PS - i'll get some pics on here very soon - just so you can see what state it is in (maybe someone will recognise it!)

it started life in the inverness area but had all the recent work carried out in the Wimbledon are of London.

the DVLA have a process for making you the new keeper of a vehicle (the V5 doc is not proof of ownership - just that you are the registered keeper). The process is quite lengthy and involves you contacting the police and local council to report the vehicle and have them run searches on the vehicle. You then write to the DVLA (with a form) that requests info of the keepers details. DVLA then contact the registered keeper of that vehicle and inform him that they require a response within 21 days. If they don't get a reply they contact you and let you know that the keeper can not be reasonably contacted. You can then (with the use of another form) send of for a V5 for the vehicle and have yourself registered as the new keeper. the downside is that you cannot prove ownership. If the original owner came back then he could have the vehicle returned to him. However, CVLA advise is that this rarely happens and, if it does, there is usually some kind of local deal done. It is not theft (as someone tried to tell me) as there is no dishonesty involved (one of the key ingredients of the offence of theft).

As I'm getting what is relatively a freebie, I'm not that fussed as it's my aim to keep costs minimal (with an R107?? I hear you say!) Thats why i'm asking for hints and tips!

Surely the vehicle still belongs to the owner even if the registered keeper is not traceable ?

21 days ? God help you if you were ill or on a long holiday ......

guys - seriously, i've looked into this and I really don't want to get into a debate over legal issues!!

I'm asking for advice and guidance on restoring a 1980V 450 SLC. I'm beginning to wish that I hadn't mentioned how I got possession!

You should get in touch with SilverSaloon - he has an R107

I also have a 107 that I've totally restored from junk....and I have a hoist. Since the pm system wont let me send to you contact me on [email protected] and we can meet and have a good look at your car.

If that suits.;)

Derek.

hello boroguy, so you will get it running and mot'd for me then i can claim it back, many thanks.

ps, 107s are terrible cars, but with timeless style and beautiful lines! except of course the slc, still the former but never the latter.

I take it the car park in question is a residents' one for the flats ? Further that the registered keeper is/was not a resident there ? Perhaps the owner died and the car was overlooked ?

I have , in the past , saved cars from the crusher - once , one that was abandoned by the roadside near Biggar with a notice on the windscreen that it would be removed and destroyed by a certain date if still there - I waited until the day before and contacted the council , upshot they were happy for me to save them the trouble of removing it and I applied for the documents - result : 1 'free' Triumph Vitesse 2 litre ! Nice car it was too , although I had to take along the wheels off my Herald to tow it home .

Good luck with the SLC .

I have done this on a few cars i have bought at auction without log books and it is the correct process of doing so.

The DVLA does everything to contact the original owner and they also judge if it is abandoned (ie. no insurance not taxed or MOT'd) so you can t apply for ownership of someones new SL.

Fair play to you

BTW - the SLC isn't a green one with green velour upholstery ?

There was one which lay on the lot at Hillington Trade Centre for YEARS , then it disappeared in recent years , I'd like to think they found someone to take it off their hands rather than send it to be crushed .

There was also reportedly an SLC in a breakers out in Muirhead with some new panels on it - I went looking but never managed to find it .

Oh , Boroguy , there's a local meeting on the 12th September up Callander direction - sorry I won't be there but a couple of the 107 owners might be there , maybe even with their cars ? You would be made most welcome . Normal format is to book a restaurant for a meal , turn up early and spend some time in the car park looking at each other's cars . See events section of this forum for details ( and pictures of past ones with some R107's present) .

BTW , most of our Scottish memebers , myself included , are called Derek :D

Guys,

have taken some pics, but struggling to upload them on here. For info the car is dark blue (under the dust) with a blue dash and carpets and black leather upholstery. Interior is 'tired' and the whole car is in need of a good clean (and not much else I hope!)

If you do a search on 450 SLC you will get lots of background info. If I had your car to restore I would be aiming for the "competition look" pics to be found later in this thread.
The 5-litre SLC Rally Cars There are a couple of merc specialists in Glasgow often mentioned on here. T J ONeil in Carntyne and The Mazzoni Bros at MERPARTS Port Glasgow. http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/mercedes-specialists-across-uk/58643-mercedes-specialist-glasgow.html
p.s. your pics are not showing up at least for me??

what if the owners in jail? lol
but seriously fair play, didn't know you could do that, keepin' my eyes peeled for abandoned cars now!

totally - for a start the car has only cost me about £30 in admin costs (though i'll know that will grow substantially) but more importantly it gives me a project and I can make the car my own!

Fair point, but at least with a car that is MOT'd you can get some enjoyment out of it while work is in progress.
