Just had look at the tyres on my new C Class sport. The tyres fitted are Continental Sport Contact 5 MO sized at 225/50 R17 W which according to the company's website are run flats.

Now didn't I read somewhere that MB had stopped supplying run flats? The tyres seem fine to me plus I have the reassurance of run flat when I have no spare wheel.

I also note that the MO means recommended by Mercedes and is rated:

Rolling Resistance(A-G)

C Grade – Above average fuel efficient tyre but still several percent below that of a grade A tyre.

Wet Grip(A-G)

B Grade – Nearly the best quality tyres to stop in the wet, stopping only 3m more than a grade A tyre but on average 15m shorter than a car on grade G tyres (on a wet road when braking from 50mph – testing according to regulation EC1222/2009)

Sound Wave(1-3)

2 Bars – Meets future EU noise limits

Noise(67-79 Db)

71 dB – Exterior noise level measured in decibels (dB). The lower the exterior noise level the better the environment near busy roads.

SSR denotes recommended by BMW but the economy rating is E for the tyre so there must be some differences in the compound. Also the SSR is around £17 more expensive at Halfords.

OK I am talking total rubbish. While all Conti 5 sport tyres are run flats as per the Continental website The MO Mercedes recommended version isn't according to the Halfords website.

Might be worth remembering that if changing like for like if you don't get the MO version and there are several versions it will be a run flat. I wonder if that would be classed as a mismatch?

And the best bit is I can't delete the thread so the whole forum knows I now lack all credibility but I do make the valid point that you can't trust the manufactures own website. If I hadn't dug deeper and got a flat I would have drove on it.

on new C class coupe, if you select 19" wheels, you get runflat tyres!

Last time I checked the optional 19's on 205 saloon & estate are run flats. Only 18's and below are standard tyres.

(I think) :dk:

Ant.

I'm a bit confused by the "MO" tag on the tyres my car. When I bought the car it was fitted with 19" Continental 5 . I pointed out to the dealer that one of the tyres had a chunk missing from the sidewall so they put on a new Conti 5 before I took delivery. When the rears needed replacing I looked around for new tyres only to find that Conti 5's were the only tyre in my size that were rated "MO", and were very pricey. On checking what tyre the dealer had put on as a replacement , it was a Conti 5 but without the "MO" . I finally chose to put Goodyear Assymetics on the rear as I had them on my Passat CC and they have a big "rim protector ".
Question : As my tyres do not conform to the manufacturers spec what would my insurance company make of this in the event of a claim?

As long as the load and speed rating is the same you are fine.

I would rather a the same tires all round, I hate different tyres front and rear, you can definitely tell when it gets damp.

deleted: wrong thread.

It's only the 19's that have run flats. All others have changed to normal tyres now

I never realised Mercedes were using run flats. Where the early 205s run flats on 18s?

MB have been using RFTs on select models since 2006 unfortunately.

I'm now thinking the S205 I tried may have been on run flats, I found the ride incredibly crashy, reminded me of the early BMWs on run flats. I had sort of written it off because of that, but may need to try another one.

MO tyres are for Mercedes. If they are a runflat version they will state MOE or MOExtended o the sidewall.
