I have had a quote for my SLK 55 for the Tier 1 MB Warranty.

The car is now 3 years old and only covered 16,000 miles. I will cover around 5,000 miles over the next 12 months.

The cost is £726 per year with £100 excess.

What do you think??

Have you had the car from new?

I'd have thought that any build/design defects would have surfaced by now, and it's not done enough mileage for wear & tear to be an issue yet. It's also a less complicated car than (say) an SL55.

Had it a year and all that has gone wrong was the rocker cover gaskets leaking. Fixed under warranty

As you say 16,000 miles is as good as new in some respects.

I think I would rather keep the £720 in the bank and use it to fix anything that may go wrong.

Does it have air suspension?
If not I'd leave the warranty I think.
Colin.

difficult call this one, with the money saved from not taking it out and going to an indi for future serviceing, you could be quids in!

but then if you have a few claims in one year it may work out expensive!

Have decided not to take out the renewal. Spoke to a MB main dealer who advised that generally the cars are bomb proof.

However if something did go wrong it could easily reach £500, most of which could be labour.

Once out of warranty I would go to a Merc Specialist instead and the labour costs would be a lot better.

All servicing after the next A service on Saturday will be non MB main dealer, unless I can agree a reasonable price.

After a year you should have a pretty good idea of the condition of the car. Like I said, it's less complex than many (most?) AMGs so with the low mileage you should be OK I'd have thought.

I had Tier 1 on my SL which was older and had more miles and has adaptive damping. But after a year all it had needed was a new battery, so I didn't extend. In the 5 following years the only fault it had cost me just over £300 to fix, so dropping the warranty worked out well.

But it certainly gives peace of mind when you first get a car.
