My E220 (W212) 2014 has a hole under the bonnet to get your hand in to squeeze the 2 pins on the flat badge to release it. The new gunsight ordered on ebay from Germany, (approx £24 delivered) pops in place perfectly. You reach underneath and give a 1/4 turn to the base of the gunsight to click it into place. Literally a 30 second procedure to swap out. I keep the flat badge handy in case I park the car in or near a place it might get molested.

Here's a video of the older bayonet type fitting. It needs the larger hole to accomodate the spring mechanism which allows the emblem to deflect. Without this larger orifice any old style upright emblem sprung badge won't fit.
