Hi Guys,

Just bought a front end damaged W164 for the wife, to replace her BMW X3, the car came off a lot worse than than the lamp post............so bad in fact that it has smashed the sump and lower engine casing.......not to worried about this though as the engine still turns with the crankshaft pulley.

The main issue i am trying to trace is that none of the lights work (brake and headlights), the ignition lights do not come on, although the mileometer will show mileage, engine obviously won't turn at this stage....and you can't operate the auto gear lever to get the car in neutral.

The smart key still operates the doors and the central locking.

Main battery been removed, checked and charged, aux battery holding 12 volts, checked all visible fuses in engine trunk and side panel.

Am sure this is all related to the crash, is there maybe a fusible link, reset etc hidden somewhere?????, does the car need reset etc because of the presafe ??

Any ideas guys ???

Does it need to go on star to read the faults or reset everything?? or to read and reset???.

Bob

Both really, personally I think a crash damaged w164 will be a money pit, I doubt a reset of anything will make it work, things are going to need replacing I'd imagine.

should know better by the end of the week once its been on star, am sure there is a common denominator holding everything off, been reading a bit about this presafe these cars have, but until my password for WIS comes through for the wiring diagrams and it has been on star just got to keep fingers and toes crossed

Bit of a non update !!!!!!!!!

Car been on Star this afternoon for a few hours with a very experienced user.....unfortunatletly despite showing the obvious airbag faults, due to what looks like a power fault feeding the various ECU'S, the exact faults could not be located as no communication could be made with them due to the probable fact that somewhere the power is being held off following the crash........the ignition smart key is visible to star, however the dashboard lights still do not illuminate at position 2.

All fuses have been removed checked and double checked in the 3 fuse boxes, the fuses inside the prefuse box all ok (inside engine bay drivers side).

I still feel this is going to be something simple to do with the crash sensors or something similar.......nothing i can do now until my membership card and number come through giving me access to WIS and the wiring diagrams.

Any of our resident experts have any ideas or suggestions of what to look at next ????? in the meantime.

Regards

Bob

On the battery connector of all modern cars there is a safety trip fuse connected to the airbag module.
I had always imagined that it cut all power so wouldn't present the fault that you're seeing but worth a look at it of you haven't already.

I'm afraid I'm way out of my depth to offer any real assistance though.
Good luck and please let us know what you find.
