So the wife got some headlight bulbs at the main dealer (as Halfords didn't know what type they were according to her reg/data etc). I know they are made by Osram, but does anyone know what sort of Osram?

She's commented that their reach and brightness is worse than the bulbs that came out (Philips - seemed to be the originals) and are WAY worse than the Osram Nightbreakers in my A4....

Anyone know? Would nightbreakers make a significant improvement? It's hard to tell directly as the car is a very different shape/position etc.

Thanks,
Dan.

Phillips Extreme vision made a big difference on the 124. Have used the Osram Nightbreaker on other cars with significant improvement. Well worth the money for either.

Why do people go to main dealers for things like bulbs, and batteries for remotes?

All you need to know is the size (h7 etc) and then get the best in that size. Osram Night Breaker Plus are on Ebay for £13.49 a pair delivered.

BTW each Halfords store has a manual giving the sizes for all models...no need for reg mark.

She went because I was away overseas, the book doesn't tell you what size bulbs (it says "we recommend bulbs are replaced at your Mercedes Benz dealer" - well wouldn't it at £60 eh?) and at Halfords for the 2005 B180CDI it says "n/a" for normal bulbs. Looking her car up, they reckoned it had HID so she walked away. I was out of reach, so she just picked up the right bulbs at the dealer to avoid getting the wrong ones.

To be fair, the ones she's got (performance aside) were only 2 quid more than the nightbreakers on ebay....and the RRP of the nightbreakers is over twice what she paid for the Merc ones.

I'm guessing they aren't nightbreakers, so I'll get a set of nighbreakers on order (probably two actually as I put the last of mine in my Audi about 6 months ago so have no spares ;-)

Cheers for the info,
Dan.

Well, the ones I got are like that duck, you know, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

Nighbreaker Plus ordered - I only realised just HOW shocking bad the OEM bulbs were when we did the same journey in mine and the wifes car looking after an elderly relative this week. Hers don't light things up 50m away - mine light things up about half a mile away ;-)

If they were £15 more than Ebay nightbreakers , they won't be HID then.

Halfords are a joke sometimes , just going outside and looking at the car would answer the question of HID or not !

Wouldnt buy Nightbreakers from ebay unless it was a reputable shop. Plenty of fakes. That is why they are cheap.

The user manual does state what bulb they use. It will be same as the A Class so H7 55W.

I couldn't see it in the manual - it states "Take your car to the dealer" quite clearly several times over though :) I bought from ebay from the cheapest place, which it turns out is part of EuroCarParts! sub 14 quid delivered, arrived today - genuine thing with holograms in sealed Osram pack - even has a Eurocarparts sticker on the back of it with their part code on it....

Now if only it wasn't pissing it down outside, nearly freezing with high winds.....:o

Right - fitted - what a hell of a difference - both in light output and speed of job. Did it this time in about 20 mins all up including remembering how backwards everything was and NOT removing the washer bottle :)

It would say a difference of about 100% - with the nightbreaker being a lot whiter and about twice as bright as the Merc bulb it replaced.

We will see tonight as we'll be taking it out to do the same run again to see a relative and we'll be able to compare it :)
