Mercedes 230w w124 abs light?? Help pls.

Ok thanks.. will have to get a replacement from MB chelsea

Ive checked the OVP and the fuse on top is not blown.. its in excellent condition..
Does this mean the ovp is ok or can the ovp be damaged from inside the relay??

What happens is that sometimes the soldered connections on the little PCB inside go faulty. They can often be renovated at little cost by removing the "can" and remelting the soldered connections on the board to repair any dry joints.Any good tv/ radio repair man or anyone handy with a soldering iron could do this for you. However its not 100% certain that the OVP is at fault so it might be worth checking out the wheel sensors first?

Will check ABS sensors and buy a new OVP anyway to cross the OVP off the list if its not that..
ABS light only comes on when i hit 60mph..? WHy the hell!

I'd try putting the original wheels back on and going over 60 mph. Then report back

cant.. gave them to scrap they were to banged up..
plus I dont think its from the wheels.. because what has it got to do with the ABS?

Nick:I was trying that in my car witch i have the same prob, but with the original ones the light does not come on

Which is exactly why I suggested it

If the problem doesn't occur with the original wheels & tyres then there must be something about the new ones that causes the problem

As far as I know, if the rotational speed of the front & rear wheels differs by more than a certain amount the ABS is disabled. This could be caused by worn tyres on one end or by different widths & aspect ratios at each end

if one end has 225/45 and the other 205/45 I would expect problems

i guess no one is going to know what it is:D lol..

bolide has a good theory which might in fact be correct.. i will take it to MB to have it checked.. but the reason for differnent tyre sizes is because the larger ones rub on my front wheel arches when i go over bumps hence the lower profile tyres..

if your tyres are rubbing they are wrong

the biggest tyres I put on my W124 were 225/50/16 and they didn't do the handling any favours at all (prone to tramlining) but they didn't rub, nor sis the ABS light come on at any speeds we tried as they retained the same rolling radius as the original tyres

use this

Tire size calculator

to work out what tyre sizes you need on your rims

they are not rubbing now.. different smaller tyres on.. thanks for all info though..

I appreciate that they are not rubbing now but you have different size tyres on the front and rear which as Nick has suggested is going to cause problems with the ABS system - d W124 has found that nothing is wrong with his when he reverts to standard wheels/tyres but when he puts his alloys on (presumably with the same tyres as yours) the problem comes back - how much more proof do you need?

Ask Howard what tyre sizes he had on his W124 because he used to have 172 rims with no problems

I used to have 17 inch wheels , with 225/45/17 tyres all round on my 1991 230CE w124.

The w124 isn't designed for a staggered setup. Even the AMG variant ( E36 ) never came with a staggered setup ( it came with 17 inch wheels , with 225/45 tyres all round ) ...

This will be the cause of your trouble.

If the wheels are the correct offset and width ( 7.5 J ) then they won't rub on the suspension with 225/45's on the front . If you have got a different tyre size on the front to combat this , then something is wrong.
