Mercedes Performance - Talking cr*p?

Hi Spinal,
Does this option generate any No Claim Bonus?
Your decision is probably financially based (no criticism whatsoever), but would it be nice to be self supportive? Again no criticism is implied and if the premiums are too expensive then perhaps earning a nice no claims bonus on a cheaper or smaller powered car might be worth considering?

My son found Directline to be the cheapest for his particular requirements, but no doubt other members have found cheaper companies.

Take care,
John

Another option would be for your dad to change insurance company to www.axamotor.co.uk or www.elephant.co.uk as they can mirror your dads bonus onto a second policy (T&C's apply) in the same househould if you take out another plan with them - that way you can start earning NCB while having it at maximum :)

That sounds to good to be true. I logged onto axamotor but they no longer do quotes on line. Elephant is about £100 dearer than my present company but I have maximum no claims bonus which would undoubtedly save my son far more than the £100.

How does this 'mirror' option work? I could easily add my son onto my insurance but I cerainly could not add his car?

If I were the main driver of my son's car, then I could not then insure my own car?? Do any of the insurance companies allow me to have two cars and would that automatically up the insurance?

Yes, I am a bit 'thick' and I would be very grateful if you could explain it for me please. ;)

Thanks very much,
John

John - I have looked into this and Elephant is allowing a second car on the same policy to take advantage of your full no claims bonus. This was not previously possible as you would have required a second separate policy. So you could insure your son's car as a second car on your policy and then add your son as a named driver. I am about to do the same on my Elephant policy.

Hi Steve,
Thanks very much indeed for the information.

You've confused me, as far as I can tell they still do quotes online (links on the left).. though to get the mirrored bonus deal I think you 'may' have to ring up. My original Axa insurance was started via their phone service, but I'm sure I saw it one point in time on their website.

No, it's not too good to be true.. I have it mirrored. :)

In my particular case I have my own car which I have insured under my name, and another car insured under my wife's name. She hasn't had insurance under her own name before as we've always shared our car. So in this case Axa mirrored my full NCB onto the second car in the household, and she starts off at full whack :) However as you can appreciate she can't leave next year and expect full NCB from another insurance company as this full NCB she has is 'virtual' honoured only by Axa, but in the meantime, she can build up her own 'real' NCB in the background with the benefits of having all the full NCB upfront :)

You should be able to add your son's car (though terms and conditions apply)
I guess you could either pass full NCB onto the second car and insure him in his own name, or insure the car as your second use vehicle with full NCB with your son as a named driver (depending on T and Cs)

Yes you can insure your own car, as some people have a 'weekend' car that they would like to insure or a classic car..

This is not a common option, I have did a fairly extensive search and found that only Axa and Elephant do it.

/EDIT:

ah I see what you mean, Axa have terminated their online system, the quote links don't actually work

Give them a ring instead (yellow pages)

I forgot to add. Elephant's telephone quote IS negotiable providing you are speaking to a manager, as the Indian staff were a bit confused what I wanted (mirrored NCB) and passed me up the chain.

I had the choice to go for Elephant or Axa, and Axa were cheaper, and Elephant shaved something off the premium, so if you don't ask you don't get.

Talking of Insurance my son has a SRI Cavalier (some one has to I suppose), which I insure and have him as a named driver. He is earning his no claims discount by having an old banger sat in the drive which he insures. Ok it costs him road tax etc but beats the £1400 per year for the Cavalier Insurance offered Tescos

Thats a good idea. I suppose you could even declare it SORN and that way you wouldn't have to pay the road tax or get it MOT'd. As long as it doesn't get nicked the insurance company will never know (or care) as you would still be paying the premiums.

I would think a car like a Fiat 126 would serve this purpose well :) Weren't they Group 1 insurance?

Just like a 2CV :)

I used to work with a guy who used to work at an insurance brokers, he said one of his customers insured a Fiat panda or something that didn't even exist, just invented a licence plate for it. By the time he finished university he had 4-5 years no-claims :)

I reckon if you think that sounds a bit too dodgy, you could buy a rubbish car for peanuts and sell off all the bits, then get the chassis crushed. As long as you have the V5 document etc you can declare it SORN and it's slightly less dodgy than insuring a completely ficticious car :)

Hi Steve,
Thank you very much. As soon as my policy runs out, I will be on the telephone.

Thanks again,
John

No worries John. Best of luck with Elephant. They seem to be cheapest for me every time but a few friends who have tried them say the quotes given to them were not the cheapest (but very close). I used to pay over £550 for my Jeep Cherokee but tried Elephant and it came down to £302 - even with protected full no claims bonus :)

Cheers,
Steve

I thought this was a good idea when i started driving so bought an old Polo and insured it for under £500 - limited mileage, told them it was garaged, alarmed etc( I was never going to claim on it so the insurers would never know). Unfortunately when I bought my C230K and tried to use my No Claims Discount most insurance companys told me they wouldn't be able to use it as the difference in cars was about 13 insurance groups. :(
Proving your driving worth in a 1L isn't the same as proving it in 'larger engined' car apparently.

In hindsight they were probably right!!

The best way to lower your premium seems to be to move to the highlands and buy a garage! I was paying under £1500 for the C230K at 21 with zero NCD, which later dropped to £700. A mate down south was paying £1600 for a 1.4 Golf!!!

This thread is way off topic! Nevermind.....anyway

I was quite impressed when I was enquiring about insuring a TVR a few months back. Using a specialist insurer, all they were really interested in was what was the highest BHP car I had previously had access to that I could prove! It was as if no nonsense no frills TVR motoring, came with no nonsense straight to the point insurance too!

:D ;) Thanks,
but really the Volkswagen Polo was a Mercedes-Benz derivative ;)

It is interesting to hear of the different quotes and companies though.

Thanks again,
John
