mercedes sl60 amg with appropriate no plate being sold in auction

Thank you. I spoke to the auction people today who didn't have much further information than is on their website. But they did confirm the only driving of it that will be done is when is does its 'drive through' to be auctioned. Anyone thinking of bidding will need an expert ear! I'm not sure mine is quite up to that and the unknowns that might be lurking beneath the hard top.

Oh, and the mileage went backwards between 2009 and 2013 according to DVLA records, so De Lorean style time travelling is another ability it appears to have. Either that or DVLA is fallible, which has been known:eek:

Hmm...potential money pit and not straight. Walk away.

I have been thinking about this car a lot and what puts me off is not any potential engine issues but rust underneath.
I always believed the 129 to be generally exempt from the rust problems plagued by the lower status models of this vintage such as the 210 and 202 but apparently they can also suffer.
I also suspect the auction house would be unwilling to state or prove the condition and operation of the hood, this and IMO appalling photos of the car on the listing all goes against it.
Despite the quality of the photos does anyone else think there's something not quite right with this car? As the paint looks exceptionally dull and IMO the colour combination makes it look very dated, I have seen other 129's in this colour combo and I have admired them (though not a great fan of silver)but this one just doesn't look right.
Also from comments regarding the seating position I,m starting to wonder if I could actually get behind the wheel as I,m 6"4" and those that have met me will know I am not exactly of a small build.
Real shame because any money spent on one of these improving the spec, eg. adding OEM Xenons, getting a Pano top for it etc. (if bought for the auction guide price of course) wouldn't be throwing money away considering the potential money these cars can fetch

Im only 5"10 but i have longer legs and a shorter torso than most people my height and I find the R129 seat doesnt go back as far as I would like. As it goes back near the end it seems to un recline the seat so if you have the seat all the way back the back of the seat is verticle which I dont like.

i recommend you try one out and see how they fit

My height being 6'3 and never having been able to get the seat position quite right is one reason I am not quite as sad to see mine go as I otherwise might be.

I tend to sit reasonably forward for my height and could get it to be almost right but not quite. Don't get me wrong I could live with it but we planned to drive to France via Spain but didn't in the end and when I think about it I think I would've struggled on a journey of that distance.

I found by setting the height low and reclining it to where I would like it then setting it back as far as I could, I could then get it as close as possible by gently nudging the buttons such that other setting (reclining when setting forward/back position and vice versa) didn't quite react (that's the best way I can explain it).

I realised this before buying it but was influenced by my heart so didn't let it put me off. Having said all that I don't regret buying it and not just as it's worked out positively financially. It's a lovely car, I scratched the V8 itch and it has given me lasting motoring memories.

Had a look at the SL60 for auction as I was in the area yesterday . History is incomplete and it was in storage in a warehouse in Gibraltar between 2008-2013. MB service history up to 2006 then nothing. Car very dusty and in a dimly lit barn. Luckily I had a torch but could only open one door fully wide given other cars around it etc.

My impression is that, cosmetically it might be OK. Not pristine/mint/immaculate but not a complete dog. Evidence of some slight (or slight on the surface anyway) rust on NSR arch, driver's door and body below boot lid. Paint dull, I think, but hard to tell given the layer of dust, which I didn't want to scratch away, and the lighting. Shut lines seemed OK. Suffice to say it didn't sparkle. Wheels nicely refurbished. No obvious leaks underneath but v dark and dusty so hard to be really certain. Sorry, this sounds like a list of caveats! However, as I'm not interested in the car (prefer something I can drive first and have mechanically checked over) I thought this might at least be of some interest/use to anyone who might be thinking of bidding. Some interior work needed as driver's seat a bit tatty and slight tear to trim below driver's seat edge. Mats/carpets have seen better days. Hard top looks OK and no rust visible, though dull paint spot about the size of a 10p piece - looks like the effect of a bird dropping left a bit long. There's a spare wheel and tyre but looks the wrong size

Battery disconnected so no chance to check anything electrical or start/drive, as expected. Clean under bonnet, though bonnet insulation flapping loose. Boot latch won't engage but boot closes and stays closed. Number plates illegally spaced, as you can see from photos.

Exhaust tips even worse in the flesh than the photos!

Spec is per the ad - i.e. no Xenons, pano, heated seats, ADS, parking sensors (if sensors were ever an option)

Hope that helps someone out there

Auction fever!!

Hammer price £24,500. 6%buyer's premium on top. Lovely condition but but ...

And no, it wasn't me!

So £25,970.00 Well, I suppose someone might be lucky, but that could be an expensive buy, I suspect it's going to cost even more by the time it's sorted.

Totally agree...definitely someone got auction 'fever' (add Estimated sale price: £13,500 – £15,000)
at the right price it would have been worth a punt...taking into account potential work needed.

Be interesting to see if a forum member bought it OR we have a new member very soon asking some SL60 new owner questions:D. Either way I wish them good fortune with the car and hope they bring it back to A1 condition, as any SL60 deserves...:thumb:

Didn't a forumite very recently sell a beautiful example with pan roof etc for 30k..?

This one seems very expensive to me - and that exhaust - eeekkk

Interestingly the eBay listing said that the mileage was "warranted". And yet......much talk of De Lorean :dk:

Guys...I think we are missing the point, it now makes sense it went £10k over book...its the only car in the world where the mileage decreases the more you drive it:bannana::D

So really it was cheap.....:D

Wow. I wish I hadn't just seen that. Way over priced in my opinion or maybe they really have gone up that much in the last two years. From what people have said about this one, that would mean what was mine could have been worth £35,000 plus which is just bonkers.

I do not feel I sold mine for less that it's worth but I suppose if there are people out there willing to pay that sort of money for one like that then I guess it does make we wonder a little.

Yup...it's called the market.

I wondered how long it'd take you to pipe up Ian.

Funny how every enquiry I had, all of which were serious, were in the same ballpark as was the independent opinion. But I guess that's auctions for you and the only thing it has made me think is that perhaps an auction would have been a good option.

Perhaps that should be something you should try Ian as if cars with a few issues and/or unknowns can fetch that kind of money it might be a way of you getting the most you can for yours.

What is the independent opinion you refer to?

It was in lovely nick under all that dust. But history was patchy despite the 'mileage warranted' schtick. I lived with bidding up to £20k, leaving enough margin (from my perspective) to spend to deal with any unknowns and taking into account the spec and history. I think it is a fundamentally good car but priced wrong for an auction sale if you put a price on the risk taken. Anyway, good luck to the new owner, it sounded lovely.

Was everything working as it should?

My guess is that with a panny roof it will need a minimum of £4K spending on it assuming that there are no big money issues, just to get it to a reasonable state.

What worries me about the (alleged) clocking is not so much shaving the mileage (these engines will take you to the moon), but what else has been done :dk:
