hi there, i have a mercedes w124 300ce-24 1991 and im unsure on what exact engine i should use. a website has recommended castrol 10w40 but not too sure if that may be too thick for the engine. help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance
I used 10w40 semi synthetic and 5W40 fully synthetic in an MB engine of the same era. If you have an oil pressure gauge which mine did, then as long as you have at least 10PSI per 1000 rpm the oil is thick enough. Although I never used anything thinner than 5W40. I suspect the oil pressure would still have been more than good enough with thinner oil.
To some degree heavier than necessary oil viscosities are entrenched in the British psyche. If we were in the US they would use 5W30 without thinking about it. 0W20 and 5W20 are the norm there now for modern cars.
Given that oil viscosity grades are in bands, that gives some scope for variation. If you are concerned that typical 10W40 or 5W40 is a little too thick take a look at Shell Helix ultra 5W40 which is very much at the thinner end of the band and little thicker than a typical 5W30.
Hello dr51ngy, Sorry for the delayed response. Can you please provide me with the full UK registration number so I can have a look on my systems Many thanks Seyi

I have the same car and when I bought it from MB they used to put 5W/40 fully synthetic in there. I've done the same ever since and 18 years later all seems well. I always, for reasons lost in the mists of time, use oil for Diesel engines and I choose the posh oil that's the cheapest in the local supermarket; usually Super U. I imagine for that you can read Tesco, Asda, whatever.
My choice always has some MB recommendations although I can't recall which numbers. Anyway, the car's now at 1/4 million miles and the oil's always nice and golden before the oil change so something must be right.
