Is it safe to use Millers in a car that's done 90k? Reason I ask is that I used it in my old BMW diesel and the engine started pinging which wasn't good so reverted back to normal diesel and it went from pinging back to clanging.

What are the benefits of using it? Will it reduce the carbon produced and delay the inevitable EGR failiure and pipe blockages?

Raises the cetane rating and lubricates/cleans the injectors.
Cetane ratio definition:-
the higher the cetane number the more easily the fuel will combust in a compression setting (such as a diesel engine). The characteristic diesel "knock" occurs when the first portion of fuel that has been injected into the cylinder suddenly ignites after an initial delay. Minimizing this delay results in less unburned fuel in the cylinder at the beginning and less intense knock. Therefore higher-cetane fuel usually causes an engine to run more smoothly and quietly. This does not necessarily translate into greater efficiency, although it may in certain engines.

Its possible if you persisted with the Millers your BMW may have quietened down eventually. These additives have the most benefit when used regularly over a long period of time. When added to a high mileage engine that's not been subjected to their benefits they may dislodge a lot of crap that's accumulated over time leading to rough running.

So to clarify dislodging crap is good as it has it's benefits but will constitute to rough running which is bad?

That's about it. Hopefully any rough running should clear eventually as the injectors get cleaned out. However any disturbance of the status quo has an element of risk. The equivalent of injector "thrombosis" I guess. The risk proportional to how clogged the system is already. There is no test other than trying it. If the car is running OK I would be inclined to leave it as is.

Regular use of BT Optimax / Shell V-Power will provide a more gentle cleaning effect over a longer period of time, so will eventually produce the same results but with no trauma and less scope for issues. However it is more pricey.

It sounds like one of the injectors had some deposits on the seat, which when partially removed allowed it to spray badly.
I would probably try another dose to see if it clears it up.
