I picked up my ML from the stealers after a service B at 41000 miles (03 plate car). They have given me a list of items that need doing at a cost of over £2200, one of which is that one of the rear springs is broken. They are charging a high price for it and say it comes only as part of a complete unit with shock. I want to replace both springs and shocks on both sides, since it will all be taken apart, but has anyone used springs from Euro car parts. I am told that they are OEM. Also need front ball joints - can anyone tell me who makes OEM. (Lemforder?).

The later ML 270's were assembled in Gratz Austria rather than Tuscaloosa Alabama so may well have a greater European content. You can't go wrong with LEMFORDER who are part of the ZF group. I know MB used TRW for ball joints for a period in the past? TRW - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia don't know about now? Its true MB supply the rear suspension components as combined spring and shock units. I think they can be rebuilt from component parts but the extra labour costs involved may mean the cost is about the same. ECP list Bilstein shocks for your car at about £100 each inc VAT but no mention of springs?? Many of their replacement springs are made by KME-Lemforder.

Hello

Gucci a member on here had a broken rear spring? Maybe he will be along to help out.

Am I being daft or could you not just buy for aftermakert springs such as those sold in kits for lowering and have them fitted?

I think with the ball joints there maybe a different quality between Mercedes parts and aftermarket, but I did see some of them on flea bay cheap?

WHat other bits or was that it for £2200 !!

Total cost included: Power steering pipe mounts to subframe broken, New rear discs and pads, new front ball joints and rear springs/shocks. This was after £445 for a service B with coolant and brake fluid change. I will take it to a specialist rather than the stealers since they are charging £90 +vat per hour for labour. Just buying the genuine parts and getting them fitted elsewhere will save me a considerable amount. Thanks for your help.

Try Whittleford Service Station. They do a lot of work on Mercs for a local specialist seller. ;)

I can help you out with the top quality b/joints, discs & pads but not the spring and strut assembly.

Thanks Franey, but I have sourced all the bits except the spring and strut assembly and I may go genuine for them.
