Hi guys as some of you know I recently bought a ML270 about a week ago and to my horror have realised my gearbox valve body is gone and have now been told my inlet manifold is leaking oil.

My question is where can I get hold of one cheap or cheapish or is there a fix for these. On bmw's you can just remove the swirl flaps and put blanking plates in they're place.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards Mal.

The maifold is made in two halves and stuck together. These two halves leak and is a common problem. They also can crack too. Can you hear a hissing noise under load?

No point in fitting an second hand one. Get a new one, it will come with a two year warranty too from MB.

Hi mine is leaking oil from the swirl flaps they seem to open and close ok. I took the boost pipe off and it seems all the oils coming up from the intercooler. About the hissing cant really hear it I'll try and listen out for it again tomorrow.

Thanks for your reply.

It could be just the manifold gaskets leaking

Hi thanks once again for your reply. So you think its possible that its just the gaskets. I think I'll take it apart sunday that will give me the whole day so I can take my time. Any pointers for me or is there any pics from yourself or anyone else that has done it before. I done my last 3.0d bmw when I removed the swirl flaps for blanking plates but looking at this manifold I can tell its going to be a pain.

Regards Mal.

Hi just one more thing I was going to mention. If I removed the swirl flaps and put blanking plates there instead similar to how we do on the bmw's how would this affect the car in you opinion on my bmw I removed the bar but left the motor in place and connected. What your personal opinion?

BMW Swirl Flaps

just sent a message about inlet manifolds its about the C270cdi manifold just remove the flaps like the bmw

Hi thanks for your reply. So it seems this will be similar to the bm's. If thats the case why is everyone buying manifolds for these cars everytime they leak from the ports. Sorry to sound like a div but after owning and driving bm's for 12 years and just coming over to merc I feel like I'm lost and starting over again.

Ps did you blank off the 270 engine with no probs.

its a 612 engine c270cdi remove manifold beat out flaps thread the holes and put bolts in put on a new motor as the old one sticks the new motor moves about as if it is pushing the flaps which it does not have have done about 20 of these here in belfast car goes great

Does removing the flaps cause any changes to the fuel ecomnomy? I removed the flaps and put bolts in the holes as you mention, but I am only getting about 32 mpg even driving it nicely. Any comments about this terrible economy be most appreciated.

32mpg is actually very good for a ML270.

I just got an £1100 bill for this and a full set of injector seals.....harumphh!!!!!

I have just had the indie guy I use do this job.

I supplied a new Generic manilfold I purchased from MBS in Denmark, the manifold needed a little filing to fir correctly, otherwise very good.

The old manifold was leaking from the spindles and the swirl valves where shot, on linkage on number five cylinder had broken away.

The indie charged me five hours labour to do the job.

The old manifold was not cracked, but clogged up with carbon, etc. I managed to clean it after soaking it in a bin of cleaning solution for 24 hours and then pressure cleaning.

Removed the swirl valves, drilled and tapped 16mm threads and epoxy fitted blank off bolts in place.

The cost of the new generic manifold was about equal to the time/cost it would have taken to modify the old manifold.

Also cleaned the EGR and associated area, fitted an EGR shunt to stop the gunking up of the system again.

Car runs much quieter and smoother.

So am l right in thinking that you modified the old manifold but did not fit it?

Interesting mod. At all the cost of replacement its MPG would have to be quite low before you would not save quite a lot?

Don't know how this mod would effect milage (if at all). Hopefully someone like dieselman might be able to enlighten us!!

Yes, just thought I would give it a go as a back up in case the generic manifold did not work out.
