ML500
Hi All,

I've had an ML500 for the past few years, which is really used as a bit of a workhorse! I need a full exhaust system including the cats if anyone can point me in the right direction. I dont want to buy new due to the age of the car ( 2002 ). I also need a few other bits to keep her going so ideally if anyone knows of either a complete damaged one for sale or someone breaking one taht would be great,

Thanks In Advance,
Rob

It shouldn't be that expensive to get a stainless steel system made up, well it'll be a lot cheaper than buying the bits new from MB anyway. Also it will last forever.

You should be able to remove a set of cats as well i believe.

Hi Momomo, I may well look into the stainless route, i really wanted the cats as well because my car has already been de-catted and has a flat spot when giving some stick, i'm convinced its something to do with having no-cats and confusing the ecu unless someone can tell me different.

The other problem is that it runs really rich and coughs and splutters when its cold, i've tried all the usual things like changing the air-flow meter ( 3rd one ), plugs etc. I wonder if it may be an ECU problem or coil pack?

I dont use the car that often so i've just lived with it really,

Rob

Who de-catted the car? The previous owner? Im sure the M113 E50 has two sets of cats and one set should be perfectly fine to remove without causing any issues. (If they removed the right set - the set of cats after the 02 sensor) Im not 100% familair with the exhaust system on this engine so someone will have to confirm.

In regards to cold starts, it is normal for the car to over fuel when cold started as it helps get the engine up to temp quicker and the cats warmed up as well so they can work properly. If it is over fuelling all the time, even when up to operating temperature then there is a problem.

The flat spot could be a number of things. Some of the issues you've highlighted could very easily be picked up if connected up to STAR. Thats the best way to go.

Diagnose the faults before spending money on guesswork.

The car was de-catted when i got it years ago, i presume its de-catted as it has real V8 burble and the emissions are sky high when hooked up to a sensor. It backfires and pops when it's first started.

I have had it hooked up to a star machine, one of my friends is a mercedes master technician ( unfortunately now living abroad ) and the codes pointed to the air flow meter which i have changed. I've had an ebay special, a bosch unit and also a used ML500 unit, all have made little difference.

I may just live with it for now, get the cats at some point and see how they affect the running. My thinking was - no cats = a confused ecu?

Thanks for your suggestions though,
Rob
