More Bass?

Hello all,

I have the Burmester speakers in my C300h. Sounds good and the quality doesn’t distort when turning it up loud. The surround sound is ok. Are there meant to be speakers in the head rests? Because the graphic in the screen highlights them when I select surround sound. Doesn’t sound like it.

I was also wondering if there was a way to get more base with the addition of a subwoofer? I’m sure the speakers all fine tuned as it is according to audiophiles but I like a bit more from my base.

I don’t want to take up boot space so was hoping for a under the seat type thing.

Any ideas?

It would appear I have one in the drivers footwell. I read somewhere there’s be one in both but I can’t see one in the other footwell. It doesn’t do anything though, no sound or movement. I’ve been through the settings and nothing seems obvious stands out.

The owners manual says to see the digital manual for all things media related. The digital one doesn’t really help in regards to the speaker specifically.

Is there something I should try before calling the dealer?

Am I looking at the right thing? The d/s footwell speaker is behind a grill. Nothing is the p/s footwell. It’s all all just plastic trim.

Does anyone have any pics of where they should be/how they look?

I found the following for the W205:

Not sure about the differences for the estate version which I’m guessing would only be the parcel shelf speakers. (I don’t sit in the back so haven’t checked lol)

But I should have 2 sub woofers in the front.

A useful site, the writer goes in to say what they replaced and kept from the above list for a better sound as the Burmester isn’t great great apparently. Scroll to the April 16, 2016 part of you want a read up:

In terms of your "functionless" speaker I wonder if its nothing to do with the sound system but there to provide the warning boings and beeps of other car warning systems?

If I don’t have one on the other side it must be possible to put one in, if other cars had them there right? I’m considering changing them both as it’s pretty lacking as it is.

Difficult to say but things may differ between RHD and LHD vehicles?

From the ‘touch test’ that picture showing a possible speaker behind the carpet is the sub woofer as per the other pic I put up above it.

It works. It’s poor quality. For a upgraded system I’d expect better. I think the system is possibly geared towards instrumental/classical music. Every test vid I’ve watched does so with that genre of music.

Now I just need to speak to an I.C.E specialist to go through my options. I don’t want ground trembling bass that can be heard for miles. But I want more kick as the music I listen to is bass heavy.

I'm sure that picture you posted was indeed one of the subwoofers behind the pedals in the footwell. That one is obviously designed to fire into the bulkhead space rather than the cabin and that may give it a muffled quality. What I meant on the RHD/LHD thing referred to the second subwoofer if it exists? in the other footwell in RHD models. maybe you best bet is to forget the bulkhead subwoofers and go for some under seat units as suggested in that thread I linked to? Only one example but other makes are available

My suspicion with these OEM premium systems is that they are there to make a big profit for the manufacturer, so they don't install the best components (basically what they can get away with), and I think the sound is reigned in at the top and bottom so that less things rattle, which would cause complaints, and the (probably) not such great quality drivers are not over-driven leading to warranty claims.

Did someone mutter cynical just then?

You are probably better off choosing the basic and spending the extra money at an aftermarket place who will install better drivers and sound deadening too.

My retail marketting experience tells me that brand names are important. A sound system that goes into an expensive car needs to be made by Bose or Harman-Kardon or Burmester or some other familiar brand. It's more about 'name dropping' than about the actual sound quality.

Mercedes don't boast about having Delphi injectors or Bosch alternators or Pilkington windscreens because customers don't care about those.
