Most reliable engines?

I would suggest the 270CDI range to be relatively bullet proof and diy servicable.

M112 v6 m113 v8
I wouldn't by a cdi for "reliability"

Stick to the petrol's stay away from the diesels :thumb: M111 engine a good call a little raucous by todays standards but bombproof

The 270 is a jewel amongst CDI engines. Powerful and frugal. It just looses out to the V6 320CDI on refinement. A correctly maintained MB diesel engine is a strong reliable unit.

At a couple of grand you're going to be looking at early CDi's which were all prone to black death, not to mention rust.

I'd say to go for the last generation of the old diesels e.g. W210 E300 TD or W202 C250 TD if you're after an oil burner.

If you're looking at a petrol, I'd go for a nice V6, maybe a W202 C280 Sport.

Most reliable petrol: m103

Most reliable diesel: om603

Though both are a little old for this thread.:(

The Black Death as you put it, Is not really an issue, Soak the Carbon in a little Petrol/Diesel mix, Get Some suction, i.e an Old Vacumn... Replace the seals... Recut the seats... Jobs a good one.... All in an average days work of a diesel mechanic.... Black Death can happen to any Diesel Engine...... thats the disadvantage of different metals as Seals..

230k miles on my 270CDI without any major problems. Still sounds and runs like new.

No serious mechanical probs on my e270cdi, worst issue was inlet manifold swirl flaps failed.
But rust in the usual places and badly rotted front sub frame.

Majority of the MB Diesels and Petrols are great, as long as there maintained properly, one of the biggest failure causes is lack of servicing or Driver abuse. Electrical components can fail at any time, mechanically rarely fail... If there is a problem fit OEM parts not the cheaper. They are cheaper for one reason :P
