ordinary motorists, you mean more like jealous motorists. this is looking more and more like envy. a little bit like those who says do not pay footballers that much as they do no work, helping people. As it is in demand, it will be bought.
As for the green issue it leaves much to be desired. Any idea how much CO2 is lost by clearing forests to make way for new homes in an ever increasing population. or by manufacturing processes and waste disposal
Read my posting again; it is nothing to do with envy. Everything to do with sensible responses to a major policy issue.
I do not believe anything we do in the UK will make a blind bit of difference to the world's climate. We are too small to matter that much. But we live in a democracy and I observe that 'saving the planet' is the order of the day. Whatever target you set for car emissions, you have to choose which cars will be hit and by how much. I would rather have limiters for all than higher taxes. I would rather MB and BMW signed a truce on engine sizes (and VW, Audi etc) than have politicians legislating to do it for them. In the E class the largest engine used to be 2.8 litres. Fine IMO. Or say a max of 3 litres. It is only to do 70 mph for God's sake.
MB tried to get all to limit speed to 155 but now everyone is breaking that. Even Fiat and the Golf are to offer 200mph versions.
Then we have to pay for the police to match them. Daft.

Ok agreed but in a democracy where will you stop the banning. fatty foods, sweets, crisps, beer, smokes, AMG ,e.t.c , we may as well queue up for rations and let them think out our lives.

Yes more laws coming thick and fast which nobody can remember and which are not being enforced.
Politicians are going to bear down on CO2 emissions. Many do genuinely believe this will help save the planet (not me, but many do). The car industry and all of us need to decide are we going to give the impression we are trying to help meet their goals or are we going to go on with 5 litre, then 6.2 litre, then perhaps an 8 litre Audi and on and on. If we do the latter, we shall have more and more regulations imposed on us and more and more taxes.
I would prefer that we accept that 70 is the legal limit, design cars to do that speed easily and comfortably -and economically. Drop the V8s which are a red rag, drop the mega engines, and concentrate on sizes that are defensible.
The new MB diesel will offer the performance of an S320cdi with the emissions of an A160cdi. That is the way forward IMO. And better petrol engines too -better, not bigger.
