mpg is now a disaster

I use Shell Diesel Extra or BP Performance Diesel. My car feels quicker on the latter but no difference in mpg.

Its got to be to do with that ECU malarky , id speak to them before the service about your concerns and see what they can do...

Those Fulda tyres do have a pretty high rolling resistance, should only account for a 5% or so drop though.

Shouldn't cold (denser) air give a better bang (of the combustion type) therefore improve power therefore require less fuel therefore improve fuel efficiency?

That's what I thought. Isn't that the reason turbos have intercoolers?

I love the cold weather, as jimbo says, more power..give me those cold mornings... sod the fuel gauge... live for today regret it 2morrow( 2morrow you have to pay the credit card bill for fuel )

c280 v6, they love the cold ( eventually ) it's worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i would check your tyre pressures too, no figures yet but it is certainly using less fuel since I pumped them back up to 51 from 30ish, less pressure - more contact patch - more fuel used.

51! You can't be serious??
The ride (not to mention the handling and roadholding) must be interesting. The fuel consumption is bound to be less, only the centre inch or so of your tyres will be in contact with the road!!!

I thought i was mad with 42!!!!

Its a little harsh but I think the shocks are knackered anyway, which may be an excuse for me to go to GSF and spend £200, then fit them with my mates and just stand on my driveway in boiler suits while the school buses empty outside my house, but thats another story. 51 max is what it says on the side of the tires (Bridgestone S02`s on the back and Michelin Sports on the front, I dont get involved in F1 tire politics so I use both!!!!!) and that what it has, it just means I have to go to the garage less to pump them up. I could fit Nitrogen which is denser and leaks less and then drop the pressure I suppose. When the pressures got to 30-35 ish I had a lot of orange light on acceleration/cornering and now I dont. Also if anybody has rips in the sides of their tyres through to the canvas and are worried about safety I have taken my car up to top speed with canvas showing on all 4 tires and they have not gone bang. They were on the wheels I brought and I knew they needed replacing, I just havnt done it yet. looking on Ebay and have found 4 Falkens 2X 235/40/18 and 2X 265/35/18 which I may just treat myself to. If I dont I will fit the old Avantgarde rims for the MOT on 06/01/06 as it will fail as is.

W201Fan - have I got this right - You have four illegal tyres on the car which you're still driving AND you normally have pressures at 51psi? Please remind me to keep away from the Ascot area until you get picked up by the police!

They are only illegal when I go for an MOT which while I have one makes it OK in my mind. Speeding is ok until you get caught, this doesnt mean that raping and piliging is ok though. The reason I posted that was to relax anybody who had rips in their tyres and was worried about safety, Have you ever seen the state that some race car tyres come back in and they are doing up to 230MPH at lemans and when they triple stint the tyres are just about a carcus with hardley any rubber left at all. If you are all that worried about me and I thankyou for that then I may purchase these or put the originals back on.

Talking about the monoblocks I have a man coming over to refurb them on tues, he will be at my house all day with a van and will refurb all 4 wheels for £220, bargin or what.

Why are the chances of being stopped by the police anyway?

rory are you refering to my good self?

I wouldn't want to see you get hurt, and in a W210 you're reasonably safe - unlike the majority of cars you might crash into when the car aquaplanes, or has a blow out, or you just lose control.
It's a max £2500 fine and 3 points for *each* tyre that's worn, or in a dangerous condition. Apart from the wear and cuts, the inflation is so OTT that's dangerous, if not illegal, too.

Admitting, boasting even, that you do these things on a public forum and you'll be on a manslaughter charge if something goes horribly wrong.

Plus even one illegal tyre would invalidate your insurance ...

And of course you don't have to do anything to get caught. Stationary at the traffic lights, someone drives into you, and if the cops happen to be passing the chances are they'll give both cars the once over.

ignoring the state of the tires which I shall soon change then what are the recommended PSI for 235/40/18`s and 265/25/18`s, I have worked with a lot of race drivers and the majority would prefer slightly higher pressures and the associated better handling offset against comfort, I guess I have just picked this up.

I was not attempting to boast about what I do more advertise the factor of safety we designers build into things, On closer inspection in the last 5 mins the two fronts have sidewall chunks that are not down the canvas and are not on the tread indicator thus legal and 1 of the rears has a small sidewall chunk missing that is `just` down to the canvass and look relativly new so have loads of tread. I was trying to get over if you have a rip in the side of your tire your not going to die in the next 10 miles as I have pushed mine harder and they are fine but I now agree possibly not the safest thing to do, i have little reguard for my own safety and do things that make most mortals wince in a workshop, but I have never been to hospital or even cut myself at work (spent 9 years working as a toolmaker/product designer, big, heavy, dangerous life threatening machinery does tend to give you a more relaxed view of the world when you can operate it without bleeding), however I do need to be reminded of the safety of others, and as you correctly put it I will probably be fine, just pity the poor surf I may crash into.

I shall put new tires higher up my list of priorities, Im sorry if I caused any offence to anybody reading.

Night night Gents.
