Hello all , i noticed my 2001 s class 320 cdi has started to get a little heavy on fuel, i'm averaging around 26 mpg, which is a mix of town and mostly motorway work, i'm light footed so i know it's not that and there arn't any leaks, also it seems a little down on power, it doesn't smoke excessively or run rough, just thirsty, no management light on, any pointers please? also i have noticed it struggles to go over 50 c on the temp guage, are they somehow connected?
Thanks.

I notice quite a difference between warm & cold weather with my mpg (my journeys are generally to work and back - 11 miles). I am averaging 33 at the moment where towards 40 was more the norm in the warmer weather.

i do around 15 miles a day in two halves, 1 mile on A roads and the rest M/Way, even on the motorway it never gets above 32 mpg when i look at fuel consumption after start on the Dash, still seems heavy to what it used to be last year

Could be a faulty thermostat but on such a short trip the car probably wont get warm and big diesels are thirsty when cold.

I'm getting around the same on a 6-8 mile trip in fact I only got 36mpg recently on a 165mile trip to Birmingham and back , all motorway , in the summer i would get 39 or 40 on the same kind of journey.

Hi i noticed this in my cars, if you run a search on fuel economy on the forum it has been disscussed in great depth.

cold weather being the main culprit use of rear heat demister heated seats etc all add to it too, ( it did in my case ) i ran a full tank without using any of these and it made a difference but cant do anything about the weather.

went to work this morning in 13 degree outside temperatures and got 39 mpg!! compared to 26 yesterday in minus 2 for the same journey, quite unbelievable really, but worthwhile knowing, Thanks all

Souldn't make it slower though should it? I notice that, if anything, mine's got more 'go' when its cold outside?

Chrisbradd.

Does the temp gauge stay at 50c after a few miles aor does it go higher?

It should get to 80 even after a mile or so.

Did a 240 mile round trip today and averaged just over 35 mpg.

The temp guage never goes above 60 unless sat in traffic for a long time, even then it's pretty unusual for it to do so. it mainly stays between 50 and 60

It wont go to 80 in a mile in the UK, mine takes 10 minutes driving to get fully up to temp when its cold
