My new SLS

Gorgeous car, absolutely love it!!!

Really nice to see the interior as I've specced the same for my C63 albeit without the amazing dash!

Some videos would great too.

I love the colour... think my perfect SLS would be matt metallic white with matt black alloys (i can dream) :)

Oh and you were right about the 335i's steering, very heavy - artificially so. My 135i had hydraulic steering over electric and was still heavy I assume the 335i was the same. Our 335d did too.

Superb car, and as much as I would love to have one, I also want to stay married :)

Fantastic car.. and what a write up intro.. enjoy the car.. when ever u r passing by Stanmore, u know who to buzz up.. :)

beautiful car, great write up many congratulations on such a beauty of a car, I hope you enjoy it to the fullest - if (and I very much doubt it) you get bored then you know, supercharge it. ;)

Very very and maybe too nice.

Fantastic write up, thanks! One of my dream cars, but sadly when I've sat in a couple, I don't fit! :( Just as well I can't afford one really! :D

Enjoy such a wonderful car!

Good evening gents.....and many thanks for the overwhelmingly positive reaction (although you're all biased....a very hard bunch to please on non-Mercedes ;)). I'm lucky enough to have had some very nice cars and this has generally created the most positive reaction and wow factor of all of them :D

The good news is that my first experience with my local MB dealer to sort some of the niggles out has also been positive (and against my previous Jaguar dealer, they have a LOT to live up to!).

They've already ordered me a new seat base (or backrest....can't remember which one but they basically said they will replace whatever part, even if both are needed). They've also agreed to remove some of the buzzing rear trim panels for me to then felt and pad-out to my hearts content - yes, I could let them get on with it but with my OCD, I'd rather do it myself, put it back together myself and then know it's done properly. Amazingly, the dealer are facilitating me doing it myself which I'm delighted about! Then, once the sub is replaced in a couple of weeks, all should be 100% perfect :D

NMake them get this perfect the mechanics love these cars so should like the Palmball challenge. :)
Keep the diary coming through I'm interested in how it fairs as a daily driver (the 350 will be too boring to use for you buddy)
Good Heath to enjoy it

Yes, I have found the dealer (who is not a specific AMG one) were very keen to help with this car.

It will be used as a daily but I have to go down to the big smoke a couple of days a week so won't use it for that - I'm not over protective of mileage but I would rather save the big miles for leisure purposes!

You can definitely expect a few write ups in the coming months from my trips to the 'ring (where you may remember I always meet up with Uli, one of AMG's development drivers out there) and to the AMG factory (it'd be rude not to)! The trips are being planned already ;)

My favourite bit about this car is the way it sounds through the gears and the downshifts....

Thanks Benjy - hopefully you'll see it soon if Rash gets his act together and arranges a meet!

And yes, despite only driving it to and from work this so far this week, this particular characteristic (which I have to say sounds out of this world) makes that journey a real event! Shame...it's only 3 miles

I wonder if MB/AMG will ever go down the mid engined sports car route with the engine behind the driver?

Slightly off topic Steve....but are you now a MODERATOR??? Jeez...things must be tough ;)

You leave my threads alone now :D

Can't believe you wasted good driving time trying to remove the tint and residue, though. Sounds like dealer work to me...

As I said above, I prefer to do things myself to ensure a) no other damage is caused and b) the job is done right!

A consequnce of my OCD ways I'm afraid....I often wish I wasn't like that

Enjoy – they are a fantastic car – we are very lucky.

That we are....I've never felt so lucky (although it is well worked for!)

After some of the rubbish threads recently this has got to be one of the contenters for the best post ever on this forum (Jay's SEC restoration being a close contender.)

I LOVE IT!!!!!

Do I get a prize if I win?? :bannana:

Yes but you can only do it on special cars who would be interested in such a write up for a C220 ?

I feel a challenge coming on.....remember, I have my new E350CDI coming on Saturday. I reckon I can make that sound as good!

Assuming it is any good of course....I wanted a car of that ilk, I didn't want yet another e92 BMW (after having had 3 of them), I'm not a big Audi fan and I wanted something German.....so thought I'd try this. But I only drove it for 5 minutes, in which time it felt very nice actually. Despite having just had the SLS, I am slightly looking forward to this, if also a bit sad that the Range Rover is going as I do like that car:(

Well, the C63 can be made with a similarly amazing dash...here's my old C63 after spending 3 weeks in AMG's Affalterbach design studio:

As for the initially heavy-feeling steering - much like when I first got my 335i, within a day it feels perfectly natural. I guess everything esle will feel artificially light now :o

What's it like in the snow?

Oh, awesome as you can imagine.

Err, no.....it's definitely not the best car I've had in this respect, despite that fact we only had a light dusting and a bit of slush!

One thing this car doesn't need is more power. Yes, I know we all NEED more power but really, not for use on the road as you just can't use anymore of it. It has a lovely balance to it now and I think significantly more power / supercharging etc would probably spoil it's character.

What about the suspension, I know this is a pet feature of yours - did it get the later convertible set up.

Good question Dave....and if I'm honest, I'm not sure. It isn't the adaptive suspension as theres no electronic button in the car...do all the convertibles have adaptive suspension?

Whatever it is, I have no problem with the suspension at all - it's quite firm but has good body control, no perceptible body roll and feels very direct and sharp. It's certainly one of the better set-ups I've driven, enhanced no doubt by the considerably long wheelbase in comparison to the length of the car!

The other reason I'm not sure is that although the registration date indicates it should be a later version (its 2011 registered so I think they'd updated them by this model year?), the little certificate you get with new Merc's (in the yellow A5 folder) has the chassis number and all the technical specs of the car. The printed date on this certificate is dated 2009 so I'm not sure if thats indicative of when the car was built or....something else?

If it was built 2009 and not registered until 2011 then it certainly hung around a while before being sold...but given I don't even think UK cars came over until 2010 and with my chassis number being in the high 5000's (they'd not have made 5k of them within the first few months), I can't see this being the build date. Difficult to tell though...small suspension upgrade aside, as far as I know theres been no updates to it since launch and, as Richard at Comand Online confirmed to me last week, even the latest model year SLS's have the older Comand unit fitted!

So, serious question to those with better knowledge than me....can anyone confirm what this date on the certificate is (my brand new E-Class coupe registered last Friday has April 2012 on it's certificate - I'm pretty sure that won't have been hanging around for a year!) and how to actually tell when a car was built?

I believe that the date on the Certificate of Conformity represents the date on which the model was certified, not the date your particular example was built.

Thanks....and that did cross my mind. Until I got the E Class this weekend and saw that certificate said 04-2012....and obviously, the E-Coupe has been around in it's current form for a lot longer than that! Maybe that date updates on a key facelift or major mechanical change? (not sure what major changes happened last year on the E-Coupe though?)
