2018 GLC 220d AMG line Premium + 1989 500SL Now sold, replaced with 2007 Aston Martin DB9
Last year, I purchased a cherished number plate via the DVLA auction, I had waited seven years for this number to come up for sale, I have had this on retention since then.

I already had a cherished number on my ML, and a few months ago knowing I was selling the ML, I thought I would have this registration valued, In March I contacted www.regtransfers.co.uk to have it valued, and thought while I at it, I would have the number valued that I bought last year, with no intentions of selling it.

Within days I received the valuations The one I wanted to sell was to low a value, the other, I was very happy to be told I could receive twice what I had paid for it, there was an agreement email to return If I wanted to advertise the number for sale, as I didnt want to sell, I ignored it. They then sent me over the next two weeks four emails regarding the registration, I did not want to sell. I sent them a email stating that this number was not for sale.

I had heard nothing from the end of March until today, when I received a email, from regtransfers , saying the have received an offer on my registration, I have checked there website, and yes they are advertising my cherished number for sale.

Again I have emailed them saying its not for sale, and to remove it from their records.

Can they do this, just advertise any number even though they dont have authority to do so ?

I suspect so. I think although am not 100% sure that a lot of the reg numbers advertised by these companies are actually available from the dvla directly.

I recall this disussion before. I dont know how they get away with it but it seems to me that there are more than a few dodgy dealers in the number plate business.

I own 2 and both are for sale on a few sites, one of them even listed as "in stock" with a buy it now option. It's quite possible for someone to click the button and hand over the money to a trader for something he doesn't have or even have access to, and isn't for sale. As I pointed out to him/them in my email asking for it to be removed, I'm not a legal expert but isn't that fraud ?

Yes the plate I bought from the DVLA recently for £399 all-in was on several other big websites for £499 plus fees.

Always check the DVLA first.

Apparently, there is a code of practice from their industry body:

http://www.cnda.co.uk

Unhelpfully, the code does not seem to be online .

Perhaps you could ask CNDA?

From the Code of Practice:

2.6 Members must take all reasonable steps to ensure that advertised registration marks are available for sale.

3.6 No part payment from a buyer should be processed before the Member has checked that to the best of his/her knowledge a transfer should be able to proceed without problem.

3.12 Members providing a quotation service in respect of any mark must request permission to subsequently advertise or promote such a number from the existing keeper.

So if the company selling your registration against your explicit wish is a member of the industry body, they would IMO be breaching the code.

How much teeth these industry bodies really have or want to have is an entirely different matter of course..

Reg Transfers T&Cs

6. If a customer pays a part payment on a Registration Mark and subsequently wishes to pay the balance on a credit or charge card we are at liberty to surcharge the said customer. (NOTE – we only surcharge the % that the individual card company charges us).

7. All Registration Marks are sold subject to availability and although Registration Transfers Ltd check out the availability of every registration mark before selling, they cannot accept any responsibility should the donor of the Registration Mark change their mind in respect of selling or in the unlikely event of failure of the transfer at Vehicle Registration Office level. In these circumstances Registration Transfers Limited will try and find a suitable replacement Registration Mark or refund the purchaser in full. Registration Transfers Ltd liability will be limited to a full refund (unless it is in some way the fault of the purchaser) and any claims for damages, interest on monies paid or any other expenses will not be entertained.

8. Any full or part payment taken on a registration mark is non-returnable (unless the transfer cannot proceed due to the default of the donor or failure of the transfer at Vehicle Registration Office level). If part payment is taken at the point of sale the balance will be due within 14 days unless alternative payment arrangements were made and confirmed by Registration Transfers Ltd in writing. Failure to pay the balance within the time limits will result in the forfeit of any monies paid and the Registration Mark will be placed back on the market.

9. Your rights under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 will be lost on accepting a contract to purchase any Registration Mark.

Complaints may be better directed to the RMIF as they are the parent body.

I have just checked on regtransfers.co.uk and my plate is not listed but a chap I do a lot of work for has his listed for £82,995:eek: I doubt he's selling it but I'll ask him monday, and he's the sort of bloke to take them to the cleaners if they are doing anything dodgy.

I will leave it with them for a couple of days to see if they remove the registration from their website. If they dont, I will quote the codes of practice from the CDNA, and see what happens.

I will keep you updated, and thanks for the help.

Just checked and mine is listed on there too! I bought it privately 5 years ago so not sure how they got it listed!!

Looks like Regtransfers will be getting a few complaints tomorrow.

They've got mine listed too for £7495

I don't remember agreeing to this although I did register the number with newreg.com and National Numbers.

I sold another plate through British Car Registrations when they contacted me and I definitely had not dealt with them previously. They did offer a good price so I accepted. I reckon the reg agencies sell their data to each other or possibly just share databases.

They have mine listed with POA, so I dont even know what they are asking for my plate

Not 100% sure, but I think these people try to sell a number plate, and when an offer is given, they then try to buy that plate from the owner. The worrying bit is how they find who owns a registration plate, I thought only the police could do that, or am I living in the past as usual:o :D

It is actually against the law to take any money for any item that you do not have in stock. so said my bank manager when i was setting up the company accounts! So unless they actually have an agreement to sell the goods or they own the plate, they are not allowed to take a deposit on it!

I'll check and see if mine is listed. They better have a good lawyer if it is!

hey ------- maybe we have cracked the source of number plate cloning!!!! :)

"They have mine listed with POA, so I dont even know what they are asking for my plate"

How about ringing and asking how much? If you recon they know you pm me deatils and Ill check it out!

I have just checked the Regtransfers web site and it state my plate is not available, so at least the have acted on my email asking them to remove the details.

How do you think RegTransfers have so many numbers in their ad?
I am sure that they must just put in everything that people phone up with!
When I bought my plate, I dealt with www.berlinetta.co.uk
All the guys in the Ferrari Clubs use him. Good recommendation I reckon.
Their service was excellent.
