My SL55 AMG

Thank you 👍

Nice! Which BT & DAB receiver have you used? I've had a look around at some options but nothing has grabbed me yet.

I'm not convinced they will be proud of the bodywork. I think the angle the pic's were taken aren't helping. The wheel specs are slightly less aggressive than Brabus would fit to the R230.

Talkwrench - lovely job you're doing there.

I've just bought an SL55 too after a while with an SL500.

In answer to the question about BT/DAB receiver, on the SL500 I wired a tiny BT adaptor from the aux input in the glove box, behind the trim so it popped up in the ashtray, and the unit (including a built in mic) just plugged into a USB power adaptor in the cigarette lighter. It is literally the size of a USB plug, so that was very well hidden, but frankly not as good as I'd hoped in terms of reliability or sound quality. They're all over amazon if you go that route.

But for the SL55 I've bought a Pure Highway 600, about £70, and it's good as gold. it involves removing the A-pillar trim to run the wires but you end up with a proper mic on the visor, a DAB aerial on the windscreen, wired into the glove-box aux socket and again popping up for power from behind the ash tray. The actual unit with the buttons on is the size of a matchbox and completely wireless, so you can put it anywhere. I really hate wires hanging around the dashboard, so I'm very pleased with it, great sound and it's completely reliable. Saved me £1000+ on replacing the head unit, which I'd expected to do.

Great thread, wish I had the time and space to do a fraction of the jobs you're doing on yours. Good luck!

Ive used black and it’s not genuine alcantara as it’s a pig to work with as it doesn’t stretch. I used a product called Milano :-

Thanks for this link. Are you planning on trimming the pillars and roof in this Milano/Alcantara?

In the US, every SL55 had Alcantara trim as standard, whereas in the UK it's fairly rare. So most of us are stuck with cheap-looking grey plastic pillars. I'm planning on trimming all that plastic in Alcantara, or the Milano stuff you've suggested. It sounds like you've done this before, so assuming you extend your console trim to the pillars, could you take a few pictures of how to remove the interior trim around the back window? The front half of the car looks straight forward, but I can't find anything about how to remove the stuff at the back!

Many thanks and keep up the good work!
Danny.

More than likely will be lowered through STAR, the interwebs suggest a 285 on 9.5J is above the maximum recommended width. The 295 on a 10.5J is considered the maximum size :dk: . I'm certainly not a fan of the bloated / balloon tyre look and will stick with what I feel is correct and wont be over-sizing the tyres.

At this point the other 3 wheels are still state side and stuck in an international distribution centre, going off some complaints online might mean they stay there for quite some time yet! God knows how the first one get here so fast. Fingers crossed

I was running 295/25/20 on my 10.5j rears (CLS) but changed them with no issues to a 305/25/20. Am currently in process of changing to 11j rears 😉

Is that right? I’ve got alcantara trim. But my centre console and door strips are carbon or carbon look. Not sure if that is from the factory. It’s ok but lifting and cracked in a couple of places

I’ve tried the BT route and found it unreliable, sound is compromised too. I hard wire my iPhone into the aux socket. I use the radio app and maps on my phone - I’m a fan of DAB but you don’t need it 🤷‍♂️

Thanks Danny, really appreciate that 👍

The Pure Highway 600 does look decent and I might have to give one a try. I dont mind taking the car apart to install. I have tried the cigarette lighter socket bluetooth RF jobbies before and found they were rubbish too so if you think this is an improvement I'll give it a try.

I really wish I had somewhere indoors I could work on the car, rolling around on the driveway isn't much fun but it gets the job done and I've amassed quite the tool collection over the years and I really don't like letting other people work on my cars, I know I can do a better job because I have more time and I care! This car has a full dealer level service history but you can see they're just booking hours, they don't neccessarily care about the car.

I hadn't actually noticed the pillar covers and plastic pieces but now you've mentioned it :D I have done headlinings, parcel shelves, pillar covers etc before, basically anything that doesn't need stitches but have considered getting a cheap sowing machine and having a go. I do have a little piece of trim missing in the rear so I'll have to get stuck into it at some point and remove it, I'll be 3D printing the repair piece because I've already learned you can't by the little piece, you need the whole panel which its part of and its big bucks and prone to breaking. Im guessing the best bet will be to half open the roof and have a look underneath the trim when it lifts up. If I figure it out I'll post some pics etc.

Haha finally someone on my wavelength :thumb: I know its been done a thousand times on the SL so im not concerned, tyre sizing is always little subjective as we all like something different. Why did you go up a tyre size on the 10.5J? traction? Did the 295 look stretched? Any pictures of the two tyres mounted on the 10.5J?

Oh dear God  I have now seen the extent of the plastic, thats utterly shocking considering the original purchase price of these cars, I actually even thought that about the pleather dash and door cards when I first started looking at these cars. I have a Autobiography Range Rover as a daily drive and its covered head to toe in the best leather I've seen in a car, even the roof liner. This car should be up to that standard. I think I'll now HAVE to trim these panels too.

The original launch price was around £150 and its £78 on Amazon.

Ordered

TBH the 295 tyre was fine, not stretched at all :thumb:Certainly no issue with traction (it is only an oil burner), got the idea from the US forum where they run 305 for a better 'stance'.
I will try and get some pics of the current set up (wheels are off the car atm).

Keep up the amazing work, your car looks stunning and deserves to have you as its owner!

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. I was quite confident about my wheel and tyre choices until the seed of doubt was sown, I should have been confident in the research I've done really. After all this isn't my first time playing this game, I've been building, fabricating, tuning cars for over 20 years! Jesus just realised that makes me sound old lol.

Seriously thanks for the kind words fella. I have big plans for the car and want to make something special of this already special car :thumb:

TalkWrench, have you got a link for those "aesthetically pleasing paddles" you posted a photo of earlier please?

I'm getting a retrimmed steering wheel from Mercedes-Benz | Royal Steering Wheels in a few days and I'd like to pop those paddles on at the same time.

Many thanks - can't believe you do all that work on your driveway. Perhaps I'll get a little more adventurous under mine.

Cheers
Danny

Yeah dude, not cheap but hey, they do look good

You'll have to post some pic's of your new wheel when you get it. I'm also having a wheel done but probably wont see it for a while.

I know! i think I've conditioned myself to suffer as I've been doing it for years, it does get hard especially at this time of the year. Doing engine mounts on axle stands wasn't pleasant! I'm hoping the weather improves this week so I can do a few more bits. I think the rest of my wheels will arrive this week so I can get some rubber fitted and slapped on! 🤞

Terrific, many thanks.

Terrific, many thanks.

No worries.

Managed to get a bit more done today between the rain (currently on self isolation due to track & trace!) Thought id make a start at the front end refresh.

New Grill added, the original was mullered! No bolts holding it in really so had to do something. Cheeky little carbon chin spolier added also.

Won't be everyones cup of tea but I think its an improvement. I've pulled all the mesh panels for a repaint as they're discoloured and showing their age. Degreased them and sprayed with engine enamel, currently baking in the drying facility 😁

Ordered some clips to remount them as most are missing and someone has used some black mastic to stick them back on 🙄 Cleaned all that off and now waiting for clips.

Also fitted the Pure Highway 600 BT interface which is awesome so big thanks for the recommendation, just waiting for a USB charging socket to arrive to add to the glovebox to keep the wiring all tided away. I'll add some pics when I get it all finished.

These are the kind of threads I enjoy. An enthusiast making a good car even better.
Great work so far. Looking forward to seeing those wheels on the car.
