I went to the above dealership today as I am still under tier 1 warranty for a B service and to look at a few things.

I arrived in there just after 9am and presented myself at reception. I was taken over to the service desk.

The advisor was courteous and polite and had the "job card" ready. He went over the cost of service B and said he reduced it down to £360 inc Vat from £410 for me. We went on to discuss the issue of my xenon light beam, which now is not an issue. I hit a pothole on Wed night and the beam had defected, driving back on Thursday it was fine and since then. Nonetheless he said he'd have it checked. I also raised the car struggles to start after being left overnight in the cold, despite getting a 25mile before.

The car was taken in to be worked on and the B service was carried out. I stayed in the show room and waited. This is where things fell down a bit but I will move on to this later.

The service advisor came out and said they checked the lights and the rear rods that level it. All was well, not suprised. They checked the electrics and there was no drain. He was open and honest and said its not right a car should be driven for 25miles then struggle to start 12hours later. The 211 fires the SBC warning, battery protection mode warning and also the ESP defective such is the little charge retained. He said there could be a drain but its intermittent and as such there is nothing they can do as it was not present. I was advised if I was ever in I could get them to charge the battery FOC overnight, as I do not have a garage/charger.

He also presented a list of other faults.

Front Pads 20% life left. Thats about right, was about half 10k miles ago. A life of 40k for pads is not cause for concern. Discs were min thickness, so advised to change. I commissioned the work for pads/dics at £388inc vat. Steep but this is MB dealer and I cannot be faffed going to another garage to save £100 and lose another 1 of my days off. Tomorrow I am off work and I would rather go to Glencoe than go to my trust specialist and save £100. The weather is good, and I want to enjoy my car driving it on roads I cherish every moment I get to drive on.

The advisor pointed out my "locking nuts" were damaged. Howard has seen this on my facebook. Only MB glasgow have been at those wheels, and someone elses:rolleyes: and as such the damage is down to them. I am £71 down and I will be pursuing MB Glasgow for the whole cost of this. JRW have given me my old locking nuts back and there is sign of damage. I will be invoicing MB Glasgow personally, later. If I need to present myself, I will.

The not so good re the visit.

I have a bad back injury and specifically asked the seat not be moved. They only move it to the workshop. I really should remove the fuses so they cannot but I always forget. Luckily they only moved it back and I have a marker so moved it back. But there is no need, I am not that tall or short and the short time they drove the car they should leave it be. I have a back problem and specifically asked it not be done, and they did.

The mechanics took it for a test drive. Fair do, they need to. A wee 6miles one. Nothing wrong. But 18.4mpg. In town mine never drops below 25mpg unless I am being mentally deficient with it and doing traffic light grandprixs. Around Glasgow I hover around 30mpg and I am not driving expert.

What did they do to get it down that low. The average speed remains low, so I suspect hard accelerations. But I cannot prove. There is not much congestion around there and the roads are freeflowing. It was not driven how I would drive it, that is for sure.

The other lacklustre experience was not to do with the service today, which was polite and professional, and to a standard IMHO that befits the Mercedes marque. This was to do with the sales staff. I expressed interest in a C class estate, as that is a car I intend to buy in the future. I explained I had a budget of £17k, which would get you one. Considering there were no customers in, the salesman chatted with me re engines and said after E320cdi I'd need a 250cdi or a V6 again, despite my contempt of 7g. I do like some speed from time to time and a car, when going to Germany, should for me, be able to do 150mph +. He said 250cdi or V6. He made no effort to get me to test one, go over group stock, talk money or timescales as to when they depreciate, he then walked off and said he would be back, and was just milling about the garage doing sweet **** all.

I guess it because I was not wearing a suit and look like a tramp.

So all in, I would use John R Weir for servicing if based in Scotland and wanting the dealership.

1. The same wheels are on it
2. They did not confuse me with someone else
3. The seat was only adjusted on the runner, easily fixed, not like MB Glasgow given same instructions and the blooming thing is way up in the air, and the wheel on the floor and the back rest all reclined and odd.
4. They were willing to knock some money off and went through the bill, item by item, to make me aware of how they've skinned me for £918 (down from £1005).

However, insist they do not road test it and you drive it with the mechanics accompanying you (If they make you sign a disclaimer just sign it) as I suspect my beloved car was not treated quite as sympathetically as when I drive.

The mpg is probably a result of it idling during the service and in the workshop/valet bay.

Driving time was about 15mins, and I saw them leave and arrive. Took them the same time. To get it down to 18mpg takes some doing....

They also reset the trip, and the "after start" trip was the same. After 4hours you get a new "after start trip". After taking the car into JRW they took it to the workshop. It did not leave there for 5-6hours. It would be on a "new" after start trip.

Exactly, which is why the idling plays a major part.

I think my average was always reset as well during the service

Exact same thing happened to me at MB Milton Keynes a while back. Seems at MB dealers how you dress is very crucial to how you're treated!! :(

It was out for 15mins and the after start was for 15mins. I watched them leave and arrive and made a point of checking it. They were out on the road in the car around grangemouth for about 15mins. They did 6 miles in that 15mins at a very low MPG. Would be fine if was town driving but the roads are freeflowing, theyve probably taken it up the M9 for 1 junction and then got caught in the light town traffic. Point is, thats a 30mpg run normally. It was fully upto temp as well, I cannot do that in 6 miles and idling does not normally warm it much.

After every service I have had, whether at dealer or indie, the mpg is always ridiculously low. I just assumed this was something to do with resetting the service indicator, or possibly left idling in the workshop for some considerable time.

I can agree with pretty much everything except for moving the seat thing. What if the man driving was 6'10"? What if he had crashed because he was 4'9" and couldn't reach the brake pedal fully?

They may leave the car idling while they do some paperwork or while they check the lights or wait for it to get to operating temp. we do this all the time and it causes the MPG to go very low.

Also the tech road testing the car will kick it down to make sure you have full power and the engine and gearbox sound/feel like they should. All normal proceedure during road test.

Does the car not have electric memory seats - seen very few mercs without them these days..

Nope, had them on the BMW and used them, they never acturately recalled the seating position. Yep I measured it before I saved the position, and after it to check....

I have wee marking on the seat runner and on the lumbar support dial which I align with other fixed points on the car to aide it back to position ;)

Sad I know, but I am very particular due to a back injury meaning I need to bang on perfect.

Get someone who can fit in it to drive it. I am average height, most can fit. Its a requirement, they said they could meet it and service desk advisor said it had not been moved. It had been. If they said they could not accommodate that need, I would have been more understanding.

We maybe lose a minute or two, but I saw them leave and arrive and checked my watch. That trip was attained purely on the test run....plus minus 1 minute

That would explain it, the average speed was relatively low, so I reckon to drop it low MPG thats the manner its been driven.

Just a wee pencil marking on the runner, easy as pie to do and when moved you just run it back until it clicks on to that marker. Seat is on lowest seating and squab tilted up right.

There is a gap on the central arm rest in a 211. Run a credit card into it, and it lines up with the lumbar dial, place a mark or note where it lies on it. Means you can move seat back exactly how you likey.

My email to MB UK

Dear Sirs.

I had my car serviced today at John R Weir Mercedes. Overall I was impressed with the experience and was recieved a courteous service with professionalism befitting the marque, as well as a bill to match. However the service advisor went through the bill, item by item and gave a reasonable discount.

However, my issue concerns Mercedes Benz of Glasgow and a catalogue of incompetence and failures. Here are just some....

1. I asked them re a body shop repair under warranty in October 2010. They said they would call me back, I spoke to the service manager there and he said he would get it chased up. This was in Novemeber, its now March, Still nothing.
2. I took my car in there for a service and the passanger side front wheel was swapped with another car and a Good year Eagle F1 tyre in the place of my Good Year efficient grip tyre. Mercedes of Glasgow changed the tyre for me but I have someones elses wheel still. That could have come off a car with many more miles than my own, however 4months in, its not failed so its not tragic and I am happy with the outcome. Although a brand new alloy is what I really should have been given, and a complimentry free service.
3. Mercedes of Glasgow changed a ball joint for me, there is some damage and scuffing on the underside of the car where its been hammered off. Its a poor job that I've paid top money for.
4. However, the final instance is where I seek financial recompense. John R Weir had to change my locking wheel nuts as they were damaged. The only people to take the wheels off are Mercedes Glasgow in the last 5months. It would have removed one wheel to fix a wheel bearing in Decemeber when one failed. It would appear the technician has over torqued the locking nuts. John R Weir Grangemout advised I replace these, which I have done for £71.00. I would like that money back. Its not fair wear and tear, its not something I have done, and it is something without a Shadow of a doubt that your Franchised dealership in Glasgow have done. I will produce copies of the bill if need be, and present myself at Mercedes of Glasgow if need be, but one way or another, I seek re-imbursement for the cost of the locking wheel nuts, one way or another.

Please take this email as my instruction to liase with John R Weir Grangemouth Mercedes (01324 666100) for further questions re the wheel nuts, and also with Mercedes Glasgow (who are operated by Pendragon) to arrange my costs of the wheel nuts.

You need memory seats on your next car - if you don't already have them .

Somebody messes it up = your position restored with one button push :D
