HI all,

Has anybody had any repairs on a Nano-painted car and did it cause any grief to the repairer - I believe the top coat curing is critical to the process.

Sorry for dragging up unpleasant memories.....

Hi Mike,
This top coat has to be cured at temperatures of approximately 300 degree's fahrenheit. I have yet to hear of any workshop having the facilities to do this. Panels, bodywork etc. would have to have everything stripped off right down to bear metal otherwise it would melt\distort due to the heat.

I am NOT saying it is impossible to colour match the damaged paintwork. The new technology is only a clear top coat! So a competant sprayer shouldnot have a problem.

Good luck with the new SLK,
John

Hi Fuzzer,
I wonder if they use a nano substitute. I have said 300 degree's because my memory is shocking, so to be tactful, I have gone on the low side. I will have to do some more research now, and get the precise temperature.

I have been told of a couple of dealerships that claimed to do it, but they have been less than 'truthful'. Tealllte blue is Teallite blue, it would be extremely difficult to see what one has this new clear top coat.

Edit:
Just done a quick bit of research and it looks like 284 degrees Fahrenheit. Me... get confused between centigrade and Fahrenheit????

During the paint process, the ceramic nano-particles float around freely in the liquid paint. When the car body is baked inside the paint shop oven at 140 degrees Celsius (284 degrees Fahrenheit), the ceramic nano-particles cross-link into a dense network instead of the long molecular chains found in conventional paint. This allows the lacquer to provide much more effective scratch protection against normal wear and tear.

Testing of nano-particle clearcoats shows they are three times more resistant to fine scratches than conventional clear coats and this allows the paint to retain its gloss. Mercedes engineers noted an around 40-percent improvement in retaining paint gloss compared to conventional clear lacquers.
