Need a real MB expert 1988 era

Congratulations, thats a lovely looking car. I hope it serves you well.
Be great if you got your money back when you get rid. :)

Whats the worst that can happen, the absolute most it can ever depreciate is £3k and that's not going to happen is it.

I look forward to seeing some pictures when she is all done.

They are lovely cars, I had a 420SE which I wish I had kept. The 500 will be no slouch.

Out. You want it for winter? Are you nuts. Auto box and all that power. You will have to leave it at home if we get any frost or snow.

I dont doubt your driving skills but what if some silly bugger runs into you. Lovely summer car though. Buy it for this winter and next summer and you have yourself a beautiful cruiser.
Oddly enough mine goes very well in the snow, I don't know if the LSD helps and the normal profile tyres or if I'm just a real pussy in the white stuff!

Good man...I know MBWirral, Steve & Rob are good guys...if you had not bought it I would have maybe had a punt...let us know how you go!

Nice car..

Yes the blue smoke will be valve seals.. can be done in situ without removing heads, but finding someone to do it is another matter as its fairly long winded and needs someone patient and methodical to do it.

Ok finally got to drive it and its really nice, solid and straight no oldness really however the AC didnt get uprated so is out of gas, the drivers seat squab rear adjuster doesnt work making it a front tilt adjuster only, I hear a click but I guess the motor has had enough. No smoke and pulls like a train but the seat and ac are enough to make me think again - cosmetic I can handle but I cant get comfy ithout a bit of tilt, i also tried to do it out of the car but the same forlorn click.
Pity really but the motor may cost £££ and the A/C an easy £400

The seat motor could be sourced cheaply from a breaker or Ebay. I don't know how straightforward it would be to fit though.

Seat motor and aircon are trivial compared to quality body repairs. If that's all that wrong I would snap it up after negotiating a small price discount to cover the aircon problem. The seat I would take a chance on on picking up a motor to repair it or even an entire seat from a breaker.

ps you won't need aircon over the winter- the only real "biggy" would be a problem with the aircon heat exchanger in the heater assembly which would be a massive job labour wise to replace.

Thing is taking it to a body shop or a stereo chap is ok in my book, limited cost and you know what your in for - I was thinking what if what if what if I was kind of thinking it would be ok and need tidying (front bumper chrome and some bits) but its a bit too much to jump in and drive its a buy it, sort stuff and drive - dont want that.
Dare I say Ive seen a Phaeton for £4,250 3.2 and 4wd :/

A big VW (nice that they're meant to be) or a W126 S-Class...no contest.

P.s. Reckon the 4k VW will have higher maintenance costs plus, any major issues with the trans or drive train and you might be bordering on scraping it.

If you decide to fix it, the seats come out with only four bolts and the motor packs are easily accessible on the bottom. These cars are great to work on.
Having said that, the recline motor is separate and is a bit of a pain, I did that one recently.

Replacement seat is super easy though.

Guys is this not a great thing to have for winter? Mercedes-Benz 500 5.0 4dr 1989
Sat here thinking £3k - ill get £2k back in April (won't I) what can go wrong it's ticketed, taxed and serviced - talk me into or out of it please

That is nice , and being an SE rather than the SEL , is actually a very rare car !

Not so much legroom in the back is compensated by better handling .

Actually , a 500 with the LSD is a brilliant car for winter and will go anywhere ; I've used mine through several winters , just on standard tyres , and never got stuck anywhere other than once on a farm road where the track was rutted on each side and the snow got to a depth that it built up in front of the front bumper - I still managed to reverse back the way I came and never got stranded . Even on ice covered roads , the car just made stately progress up hills where lesser vehicles were spinning their front wheels into the gutter :D

I just gave away a pair of electric seat chassis with looms and switches - the drivers side one was memory electric too !

The most common fault is the door switches , but if you hear a click the switch is working .

It really isn't that hard a fix - find a local indy who will do it and it ought not to cost much . Worst case scenario is a used chassis and put your mushroom cover onto it . I did the same job on my own car DIY in a few hours due to a broken spring .
