new 500e engine ready....

Peak power figures are misleading though I don't doubt the quality of the Renntech unit. Imagine if you fitted a supercharger...

It was a bare block...a 6.2 litre with nothing inside. Renntech's power figures are irrelevant, actually Renntech's 6.2 was officially rated at 460bhp. And Renntech's figures are usually optimistic.

We've essentially built a bespoke unit and the key item here is the heads....which have been modified by one of the USA's leading race engineers and flow tested to derive a 525bhp output.

Yes, a supercharger would be massive, but i prefer naturally aspirated....plus there ain't much room in the 500e engine bay....fitment of a supercharger requires major work, relative to a usual install.

Key for me is to get the RRFPR fitted with wideband o2 sensor, get it tuned right on the dyno and then get the dyno output. drivetrain loss assumption will be key, but we can do a few scenarios.

do the yanks have a thing against beards!

Probably not beards alone, but the combination of beard + turban + a name that looks like the name of a group of people who wear both and are enemies of the US is the downside....:D

Honestly speaking though, US immigration were as good as gold,. no issues at all, and in the last two trips, i have been through about 7 different airports !

Going to be very impressive!

Any idea of torque? Original gearbox is only rated at 600Nm odd isn't it?

Torque figure will come with dyno run....6 spd manual is being designed to go in the car but that is a long way off completion. Like the sleeving, there is no off-the-shelf manual transmisson bell housing which is a bolt-on to the M119/M117. And with a manual transmission there are a dozen other things that need reworking.....so for the meantime, the auto gearbox will have to try and live with/transmit this mass of power to the diff.

I have a 3.07 diff from an AMG E50 as well...i need to do a quick fix with that as it has different ASR pick-ups but much easier adaptation !

Talbir, will you be changing the suspension set up?

Hi mate

not at the moment...car has H&R springs with Koni adjustables up front and Renntech roll bars....should work but we'll have to see how she sits and handles. First priority is getting the engine shipped back here, then getting it in and tuned and on the dyno.

Cool, just a couple more whilst I have your attention...

I realise your theme is Renntech this time, but out of interest, why did you sell the AMG suspension kit when it was designed specifically for the 500? Surely this would have been the perfect set up for your car what with the massive increase in power?

Also, what do you have on the back of the car currently? H&R springs with OEM SLS struts?

Finally, how much of a difference has the renntech bar made to the handling? It looked quite tidy in the Autcar shoot - definitely better body control than mine. Have you tried any other bars?

That's a big regret i have selling that AMG E60 kit (especially as i got it for 400 Euros !)....but at that time, the 6.3 was not in the gameplan.

However, the set-up i have on the black car should cope well with the power....yes, rear is OEM SLS. Beauty of SLS is that it can be set-up to ride REAL firm :-)

The Renntech roll bar is not on the car yer....the Renntech bar (32mm !) , the Renntech carbon large airbox (allegedly opens up a bit more flow to the tune of 7 bhp) will come across in the crate with the engine. So the 500e will handle EVEN better with the Renntech bar. When i put the BRabus bar (30mm) on my w124 TE, the change in handling was remarkable....that thing can be hurled around bends at speeds not possible before and you won't be sliding out of the seat either !

The engine looks pretty clean already. I suppose you can always powdercoat visible stuff later on. Thing with M119 is that although it's a very handsome engine, it's not 'flashy' if you know what I mean and too much bling wouldn't suit it. I think it's only cam covers that you'll want to do - same colour as airbox?

However, engine out is a great opportunity to renew stuff like firewall insulation (you know how they go yellowy) as well as rubbery bits like mounts. Also new tanks/reservoirs will make a big difference to how good bay looks.

Maybe some bonded SS hoses (some areas already have them so wouldn't look out of place) Custom aluminium intake pipes (with rubber/foam around mid section above heat generating areas). Just some ideas.

124-682-87-60 - left insulation
124-680-50-25 - right insulation

Wow I have just read this thread from start to finish!

What an awesome post!

What was the end result, it was a few years ago?

I am based in W Kensington, do you ever show your amazing collection? Do you still have the full list? Wow, just about ever dream car on there! I saw a W124 560E AMG 5.6 black on the M25 a couple of years back, was that yours? I think had a Stratton sticker on it, looked smart but not concours

Kind regards

Edward
