Hello I have just recently purchase a 1993 Mercedes 190E 2.3 w/108k miles. I know this is the detuned version of the 190-16 but what else is deferent about this car? The car is in perfect condition and I would like to keep it that way. Can any one tell me the do's and don'ts of this vehicle, and what you recommend doing to this car to insure its longevity?

Thank you.

Welcome,

Waxoyl the under side. That's a good start.

Not a 16v??

Unfortunately its probably not a detuned 2.3-16v twin cam engine. :( Its probably a bigger bore version of the 2 litre single cam engine with hydraulic lifters which actually is a good thing for reliability/maintenance. :) It shares lots of things in common with the 2 litre 4cylinder engine on which its based with the same injection and ignition systems. (not exactly the same as the 16v model) The only weak spot on these engines is the single timing chain/tensioner but this was later changed to a twin duplex setup which is very reliable. They do tend to blow their cylinder head gasket at high mileage also so worth keeping an eye on the coolant 50/50 antifreeze/water. :( Front springs can corrode and break at high miles and rear discs can corrode thro lack of use. If looked after with regular fluid changes at the recommended intervals this model can last a long time. Good luck and welcome. Rust is probably not a problem in Sunny Arkansas;)

edit:- if you post a couple of pictures including one of the engine compartment can tell you for certain.

Thanks for the info. Here are some pics of the car and engine. Someone told me this sticker is for a limited edition, any body know any thing about this. Thanks.

During the run-out of the 190 model in 1993 Mercedes did produce a series of "Limited Edition" models. They were available in several special metallic colours and had several extra cost options as standard. They were not sufficiently different ( here in the UK) however to merit any extra value except they were the last of the line. From your engine picture I can confirm you have the single cam engine as I said in my last post.
