New E Class - Specification

Exactly why i bought new last week,ok the facelift is out in march but i got the model/colour/spec(and more) i wanted at close to 20% discount(£41k list-after dealer contribution/finance for 2 months it cost me £33,100).

My wife got an SLK200 on Agility a couple of months ago, on a one-off deal- I reckon the total cost of ownership over 2 yrs will be around that of a 2 y.o. Used Approved example. Which wouldn't have had the colour combo she specified.

Even when new comes at a premium, it might be worth it for the peace of mind of full warranty- and particularly the assurance that you've not inherited a time-bomb caused by the previous owner's engine mods.

I bought my new E220CDI Avantgarde just before Xmas - I traded in my 3yr old E220CDI, and got what I thought was a fantastic deal. I got about 20% off plus a fair trade-in for the 3yr old one. This has 7g+ plus the newer style DRLs, and the 'sporty' exhaust pipes, so seemed a great upgrade on the previous one. DAB radio and Becker Map Pilot (:D) too.
I hadn't actually been looking - we were researching the M Class for my wife, and were looking at a long wait for a new order, and the salesman said 'it's a shame you don't want an E Class - we've got those in abundance' - and one thing led to another...

E class in abundance?!?!
How come, 1 month later, we can't find an E220 estate anywhere then!?!?

Because the lease deals that have been offered by the fleets have been stupidly cheap and they have sold them all quick.

For example, I got an E250 for less than a base model A4, C class or 3 series. For ,any looking to change company cars their have been some great deals.

Add the above to the fact you've not been able to factory order an e-class diesel since before xmas(only facelift orders being taken for march delivery) & that leaves great deals on what was left(pre-registered) & now virtually none left.....

As others have said, presumably they've sold them now. I ordered it a good 6 weeks ago. The dealer showed me the screen with the available cars - there were literally loads to choose from. I wasn't looking at estates - maybe there weren't so many of those to start with.

Well, seems I've lost out. Wanted an E220Cdi SE Estate with 7G, in any colour except white............ not a single one to be found anywhere.

Gutted, was really looking foward to having one. Going to have to settle for a BMW instead, which will be nice,.......... but its not a Merc!

I'm the opposite to this:

I've had both and prefer the new more precise sport type of cars. I'm not a racer etc but like a poised car and mb are delivering.

AMG sport and sport plus. Yes please.
Not for me. Awful ride and the Sport is entirely pseudo. No more performance just bits of trim.
By all means make Sport for those who want ti but there should be a good alternative too.

The Avantgarde E class was a fabulous spec with leather, Xenon lights, black ash trim and reasonable wheel size. Many, many reviewers said avoid the Sport because of the ride -not to mention the poor seats compared with the AV seats. And the tyre noise on the larger wheels and lower profile tyres on the Sport was really irritating at cruising speeds IMO.

I note that now all the ML's are being relabelled as AMG, even the 250cdi version. When everyone has a degree, a degree means nothing. Nowadays neither Sport nor AMG mean a damn thing on a 2013 Mercedes. Shame on them.

Sport spec cars have bigger bolsters in the seats compared to AG cars. I cannot see how thats a bad thing. Sport cars come with all these trims, xenons etc and you can add black wood. Ride is fine on E sports and it drives so well.

AMG Sport trim is Mercedes' version of BMW's M Sport trim

Many like the Sport versions. Many like the AG versions. MB should offer the choice.
To remove the 3 pointed star from the E class is almost beyond belief.

The Board of Mercedes are now entirely schizophrenic. Half the time they want to portray themselves as saving the planet, the good guys, environmentally friendly, calling everything Blue Efficiency and Bluetec. The other half of the time they are relabelling everything 'Sport' or 'AMG'. Or try the latest mouthful so you can have it all ways -the ML250cdi has now become: -
ML 250 CDI Bluetec AMG Sport

Ridiculous.

agree, it's a Mercedes signature and icon for the saloon range.

Like Coca Cola getting rid of the original coke years back.

I do wonder about the UK arm and also the dealers as well.

I think they are spooked by BMW in terms of how they deal with the UK market.

Meanwhile back at home base MB started to lose direction around 2005 in terms of what they were doing. Apart from the CLS and S they became a 'me too' brand - basically setting the parameters of their product by what they saw in the competition rather than actually making their own space and making everybody else copy.

The S still sets the standard in its sector.

The CLS is sort of hanging on though I think the new version looks heavy handed and the interior is a bit of a dogs breakfast compared with the original. But the A7 offers 4WD. The 6 Gran Coupe is more expensive but hellishly pretty and much nicer inside (and has that tortuous +1 acommodation option). If BMW offered a basic 628 or 630 Gran Coupe they might devalue the 6 overall but I think they'd blow the CLS out of the water.

(I can't help feeling that if MB had just updated the old shape a bit with newer engines and dynamics it would be a georgeous package - especuially if they offered a 4Matic version).

From what I can see the E is being eaten by the 5 series in suburbia.

I think the C is holding its own as commodity metal against the 3. But the 3 offers a hard folding roof option. And they have xDrive 4WD coming in with more engine options. And the 320d is a supremely attractive package to both younger and older drivers.

I like the bonnet star but know a girl not too dissimilar to me who got a C class SE. Had the sticky up badge. She got a flat nose badge as she said it was annoying. My mate drove a merc too and thought the badge was annoying.

I think it's ugly and heavy handed, albeit low slung.

Inside is elegant, I agree. But only if you have the full leather interior. Otherwise, the plastic is nasty.

I have to agree with Steve, can't comment on earlier 212's but my new one is a sport & the ride is a perfect balance between not too soft & not too firm(agility control suspension)-the 18" amg's are just right for the car too & the heated leather sport seats are without exageration the most comfortable i've ever had in a car,as for the trim the brushed aluminim looks really good against the black interior-just my honest opinion........

Forgot to mention it's also got self leveling/auto dimming xenons with cornering function-don't know how i managed without them on the cls!
