Car
S211 Sprinter 213CDI, & the new T-class
Our car has gone in for its MOT and we have been given a new E220CDI to play with for the day.

First impressions
This specific 220 has 3000 miles o the clock so we can argue it has not loosened up yet, but first impressions from 'She Who Must Be Obeyed'

The engine is much quieter than the old 220 and is also quicker than the older version. She was impressed

MPG
we looked at the average fuel consumption and it's showing 301 miles with an average speed of 32mph and is averaging 36mpg. I have no idea if that is good, bad or indifferent. It's not my car, so I have no axe to grind whether it's a good figure or bad.

De-badging
I always think that most folk who de-badge their vehicles do so because it usually has a smallish engine. I fully accept this is a generalisation and no doubt we can all cite opposing examples of my generalisation. This vehicle was completely de-badged.

Tiptronic
Cheap and cheerful seats electric adjustment, but manual fore and aft movement.

I might be able to answer a few questions but as usual the car does not contain the manual.

Regards
John

As its new the manual can be viewd "on-line". As for debadging, I never really understood why we had to have badges in the first place! :D

Lucky you - I was promised an E320CDi when my car went for service this week and was looking forward to trying it. I'd even cleared a couple of hours in the morning to go for a drive.
They walked me out to an...A Class. "Where's the E320CDi"? I asked? The service advisor just shrugged.

:D We know the feeling.

Just recently though we have had a GL420CDI, the ML320CDI and now this one. Before that I think we must have had just about every type of A-class ever produced :)

In fairness the GL was a Mobilo issue, the ML was when the car went in for its service and the car has now gone up for its MOT (and that seeping rear suspension)

Wife has disppeared in the car again :)

Not having mudflaps certainly leaves the lower panels exposed to road muck?? :)

John

My local MB stealer had my car for a full service, but the day I was meant to have their courtesy car (E320CDI) some goon had previously written it off the day before. The advisor even showed me the car around the back....it was a total mess

Strange, I got a brand new E320 CDI :bannana:

Last time we had a service (wife's CLK) I was given an E320CDI Sport.

I was given a new fully loaded E220 CDI by Purslows when the green hearse was recently serviced - apart from the poorer engine refinement it felt quicker than my W210 320 CDI. I was very impressed...

Sounds like She Who Must Be Obeyed has given me a fair assessment of the vehicle :D

That sounds like a charmed life:) or wife;) . We always seem to be given something my better half would like instaed of her own car and that's expensive!
Sounds like a good summary of the new E220. I notice 'WhatCar' now claim the 220 as the pick of the E range. With current fuel prices, who could blame them.

I find Johns comments helpful. I have the older 220cdi, and heard the 170bhp engine (same as 270cdi in terms of power) was a peach (for a 4cylinder diesel). It should be faster, more efficient (43mpg average over 3k miles from my car).

I rather think its been given a tough time by the folk at the garage, or used in town a lot.

Is it not the same engine in the W204 C220cdi?

I am the only one who drives my car so memory seats aren't an issue. when it goes in for a service, I get a pencil and draw a wee line on the seat runner that ties in with the poisition of the seat, I therefore know where to put it once they are done. As for height, I am over 6ft so the seat is on the lowest setting and have the tilt of the base at its hieghest for thigh support. The steering wheel is always telescoped out to the maximum. It takes about 30 secs to get the position right so no biggie for me....

Question, how much more sluggish is it than your E320cdi. Is the handling different i..e better as it has a lighter engine up front. My boss has driven an E320cdi as siad you could really feel the weight in the nose, this isn't a trend I've seen with 220cdi car.
