New Ford Capri

When I was very young I used to take a Profeasionals toy Capri with me to play with whilst I waited for my Mom to do her various cleaning jobs in houses, apartments, community centres etc.

I’d spent hours looking and the photo and description of it in the Argos catalogue. Then one day it was mine, it was secondhand so I didn't have the stuff that came with it, but I had the Capri

Then some time later the man who owned the chip shop had a brand new 2.8 in blue over silver and my goodness it looked good, and even better than the photos I now see online.

But for me - and probably many people - was the 280 Brooklands which came a few years later. A chap around the corner bought a brand new one. What a handsome car that was.

Here I am 40 years later longing for the latest incarnation of one of the coolest and most glamorous cars, named after one of the coolest and most glamours locations.

I’ve still got mine! You can tell it was one of my most cherished toy cars as it’s not got a mark on it!

At least the old Capri had a competition connection. The RACING V6 ENGINE was based on the German TAUNUS V6 rather than the UK Essex V6-Something to do with the crank main bearings IIRC.

OK, so.... how come no-one's mentioned that

the new Ford Capri is £50,000 ?

That's no longer a shocking price in the world of new car pricing.

My initial thought was "that thing has four doors" so that makes it a Cortina. Then if they did a coupe version it would be a Capri.

And these days as BMW are mass market machines the 3-Series is the modern Cortina - which would make the Capri the Ford equivalent of the 4-Series.

New car prices, EV or ICE are bonkers compared to annual salary
But I'll bet that £50k will appear only once in dome small print

The headline number will be an almost infinitesimal / affordable £750 a month or so.

That car, yours for less than "a bag of sand' and your old car. Bargain....

Yesterday, at Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Ford stand was bright yellow with “The legend is back” written all over the place to celebrate the new Capri - you can see them in the window on the right but they were dotted all over the place!

Rob, what was your thoughts after seeing it in the flesh??

It’s what it looks like, a modern crossover. It’s quite a generic design and could have been from one of the many Chinese brands at Goodwood this year. It doesn’t have any obvious Ford styling cues, and visual links back to any previous generation Capri.

As I searched my photos looking for the Capri I almost accidentally posted this. The colour probably tricked me but even the new Macan is more generically styled in the metal than we have become accustomed to, maybe it’s a trend.

On the subject of Chinese brands, they were really really going for it at FOS, and there were no cheap as chips city cars to be seen, just lines of supercars and luxury cars with brand names and model designations which will take time to adjust to.

The expression on the face of the bloke in the bucket hat says it all:)

The most authentic ( only?) "Capri" aspect to the car they are displaying, is those fluffy dice,,

The side on view shows the curve of the window behind the rear passenger door is picked up as a design cue from the original.

But because it's a four dour crossover as opposed to a two door coupe that styling is a bit lost.
