Hi, im sue am im new to the forums, i have a 1999 slk. iv just recently snapped my key, so ordered a new blade, £33 when it come i was told the joint had snapped so i needed a whole new fob, ordered a fob £200 mercedes parts dept man told me i had to recode the new fob to the car.
1. press button twice
2. insert into ignition turn to postition 2 wait 5 secs remove and key should work.

did the above, and car would unlock and lock but would not start ignition, would not turn to position 3 or turn over. called RAC who tired everything, even disconnecting the battery to see if it would reset. got back on phone to mercedes parts who said nothing wrong with the keyas its coded to my car, ignition barrel must be broke, it would cost £120 to put on diagnostics, part would prob bee £120 and 3 hours labour at £120 per hour! thats £600 and id already spent £200 on the fob! RAC got it started under the bonnet by by passing the ignition, so not immobilised and i could at least get it outside my own house (it had been stuck over the other end of town) but as soon as you take the key out again wont turn to positon 3. new ignition barrel? funny how it worked perfectly before the key snapped? has anyone else come accross this, im at my wits end. plese help.

Hi & welcome,

Im sure some tech guru will be here soon;)

Come on chaps!

Describer your remote fob?
Can you turn the key to position 1?
Do you still have the old remote fob?

The key is cut and programmed to match the ignition/security module and lock on the MB database, which are initially what the car was built with. If the lock has been changed for some reason but the database has not been updated, the key will not work, but as I understand it, if the module has not been changed the remote fob will still work. Is the cut section of the snapped blade a match, physically, for the new one?

yes it is exactly the same, and it opens the locks, but wont turn to poistion 3, i have consulted a mercedes specialist now, who has told me the lock barrel has gone which will cost approx £200 plus about 3 hours labour, wish i had paid £200 for a spare key fob when i bought the car, i could have just used that . im still not 100% convinced the ignition barrel has gone as i said i had no problem with it before the key broke, which incidentially didnt break in the ignition!

the remote fob is about the size of a matchbox and has a lock and unlock button and a small button to flicik the key blade up (like a flick knife)yes i do still have the old fob and blade, the RAC man spent a couple of hours and tried everything , he even tried taking the chip out of the old fob and tried starting it with that. yes the key will turn to positin 1 & 2 but not 3.

I expect the ignition switch is faulty.
