New member - Advice needed 450slc

Hi and welcome!

The car looks nice in the pics, but 107s can have a lot of hidden rust so be careful.

Also bear in mind that the SLC isn't generally seen as a particularly desirable model ... you'd normally expect one to be priced below a 107 SL of equivalent age and condition.

Yeah I've read a lot about the rust, I'll be checking it all over for that. I've also heard people saying it's not as desirable but personally, I'm not to bothered about driving the car with the top down so a hard top is fine for me. Having said that, my other option at the moment is this:

1980 MERCEDES-BENZ SL CLASS SL 350 CONVRTIBLE

Go and talk with someone who owns one, drive it ask about running cost, what repairs have been done ,has it had rustproofing,if its over 120k unless it has fsh, hows the engine running 3 oil pressure is good but not everthing
if you could take it to a good indie have him check it over

chrome work is big money
the 450 is mental on fuel,be warned
but a 107 is great fun,the man that owns the petrol station, thinks it great

good luck in your search , good choice out there at the moment, take your time the right one will come

I think they may start turning the corner for the reasons you say, Bill. Rust has killed a lot of them off, and they were noticeable by their absence at the official MB Owners's club SL day last year (only one attended, I think).

I'm not particularly a 107 SL fan, so can't advise other than rust, as stated, but I wouldn't have thought £5495 was excessive for a good one, or one with potential, and feel that they may need saving! I have to say that this line in the ad made me laugh:

"The previous owner was a member of the Mercedes Owners club and in 1993 it was valued at £12,000"

Hoorah!!!

The biggest rust problem and the most difficult to fix is the dreaded scuttle rust. It's impossible to inspect properly without some dismantling. Lift the front carpets and deadening and if there is the slightest sign or smell of dampness walk away. The repair for this will cost more than the car.
Not quite as bad but check the boot and foam to the left of the spare wheel well for damp. The rear lights leak.
Bumper chrome is vastly expensive so check carefully for swelling or slight cracking of the chrome. If you find anything it will be much worse underneath.

Great fun cars other than all that so good luck. :thumb:

It's not really a hard top/soft top thing, a lot of people simply don't like the styling (e.g. the 'filler' panel behind the side windows at the back). Obviously that's completely subjective though, and some people do like them!

i owned and still own one from early tax exempt their more expensive new than the sl and rare to find, the price is too high on this one, but i have friend who has sl for sale give me your email i send u details

Thanks for all your replies and advice. I've lined up a couple to take a look at (both slc and sl). I'll come back with an update in a few days.
