ML270 CDi
Hi guys,
just purchased a 2001 ML270 CDi Auto with sensible miles (90k) & plenty of history.

Car seemed fine on purchase although a bit sluggish (sorted by lubricating throttle cable & adjusting it a little in the engine bay), so all was good!

However, the following fault has developed, with symptons as follows:

Approx. 50 miles after purchase it all of a sudden (on a start-up) wouldn't change 'up' gear (30mph was approx. 3000rpm). On pulling over at the side of the road (with the brake pedal pressed), it would not engage either R or P, without 1st applying the park brake pedal & taking foot of the brake - it would then shift into R or P no problem.

Since then, every time we enter the car & turn on the ignition, the Auto transmission display on the dash (next to the clock, displaying P/D/R etc), does one of 2 things:

It either:

1) shows P (as it should), we then start the car, engage Drive (or Reverse, or a combination of both!) & everything on that complete journey is fine & proper, until we turn the engine off....
or,
2) shows no letter P in the 'yellow box' display at all - then when Drive is selected the car wont change up the 'box, & it wont let you engage Reverse (without taking your foot off the brake pedal, applying the handbrake etc etc - as described above). When driving under this situation, either forwards or backwards, the display box stays completely 'yellow', without D/R/P etc

I have spent hours & hours trawling the web & found loads of info, but wondered if anyone knows if these particular set of symptoms & responses may point anywhere in particular?

For reference, I have replaced the battery with new, & also had it plugged into a Snap-On Modis machine which didn't register any faults.

Please can anyone help?, love the thing other than this problem!

There is a 'trick' that apparently resets the gearbox - not sure if it works or not:

1) switch OFF the climate control and radio.
(2) close ALL doors.
(3)Turn Ignition key to all dash lights ON position(not as far as start though)
(4) Press and hold the accelerator to the floor for 20 seconds.
(5)with Accelerator still to the floor, turn the key to the OFF position DONT REMOVE IT YET.
(6) Slowly lift your foot off the accelerator.
(7) Sit for 2 minutes DONT TOUCH ANY SWITCHES.
(8) Remove the ignition key and exit the car.

Could be a placebo....

However, I would suggest a change of ATF and filter! Check your history as this should be completed every 40k miles. Should not be too expensive from an indie.
