2002 Mercedes E270 CDI, 2010 Toyota RAV4 XTR
Hello,

Just bought my first Mercedes, moved over from BMW. Late 2002, W211 E270 CDI in Silver, Auto, Panoramic roof and all the other toys that go with it (I don't think a box was left unticked on the options list!) and I live in the Newbury/Reading area.

I bought the car with some faults known (some others not). Firstly the speedo is stuck at 20mph, but a quick search on eBay suggests they can be replaced (coding not an issue) for less than £200. Other fault is the nearside door mirror doesn't fold (probably just a lose connection - hope) and the last one being the potentially dreaded glycol issue! Didn't notice anything on the test drive but when I drove it home, the gears were very jerky through 1st to 2nd (and vice versa). There is also occasionally a droning noise when coming to a stop (not sure if related, but there is also have a humming noise around 80mph?).

BUT, I got what I believe to be a good price for the car.

So, it's lovely driving the car when moving - smooth, responsive, fantastic on fuel economy, quiet (inside the car) etc... just a shame about the other bits.

Car is booked in for a gearbox oil flush/service this Friday - worth doing or should I just go straight for the gearbox/torque converter and radiator change straight off?

Gearbox flush/service is £250 +VAT from my local independent.

Must say though, it is a completely different league to driving the BMW (I have had them for the last 10years - 330cd Convertible, 523's and 540's)! Not sure if it is because I'm getting older, but the driving style of the Mercedes is much nicer!

Nice to meet you all and hope to catch up over a beer or few next time there is a gathering.

Best,
Iain

Welcome aboard Ian.

If the car has a Valeo radiator - Change it.

There are plenty of GTG's in the Spring/Summer months.

Thanks all. @ringway, yes, it does have the dreaded Valeo radiator (we spotted that on viewing). Will be changing it once I know what the current issue is - really hope it is not glycol as that means more cash for pampering :)

Looks like you've already found an indy, Ian. However, you're within striking distance of Olly at PCS in Horndean and that is a bonus.

Best of luck with the car.

Olly? Is he someone I should be talking to then? Experience with these problems?

He is an ex-Mb tech and an excellent bloke to boot!

Extremely knowlegable with a fully equipped workshop.

If you have a Valeo then it's a good idea to change it at some point as preventative maintenance anyway. If not planning to do that yet then get a sample of the ATF tested for Glycol when it is changed. If present you'll need to change the rad or have a separate oil cooler mod fitted anyway.

My ears are burning.

250 is quite strng for an ATF change. We charge 175 inclusive

Welcome to the forum. :)

Welcome. The 270 is a belter of an engine, reasonable performance and refinement and the best economy of all CDi engines.

Thanks all. Nice to feel so warmly welcomed :)

I might try to negotiate with the independent tomorrow then - there is a major convenience with them as they are collecting and dropping off on the day.

I suppose it depends on techniques used. The independent said they use the best part of 8litres of ATF to 'flush' and replace the existing fluid. Not sure whether all garages use the same method.

Additionally, the only door whereby keyless entry works is the rear nearside. Any common reasons/fixes?

Probably the actual buttons in the handles as the system must be operating for that to work.
Are you sure that door actually locks?

The doors only lock with the remote.
