Mercedes 230s Fintail. Finally bought one. Always wanted one. Now the love/hate bit starts :) Boy do I need help here or what?!!!

Hi all, once all the XMas pudding's gone and the last of the wine drunk, I'm about to start work on my 1965 230s Fintail. The list of jobs is a long one but I have an immediate and ongoing problemwith a fuel starvation issue. The car starts (sometimes) and will run for 30 secs or so (won't rev properly and little power) before dying. There's fuel in the fuel line (can see in the in-line filter I added) and what looks like a new fuel pump at some time.

I've checked all the electrics ie. coil, condenser etc and all fine. The car will start with easy start sprayed in the intake, run for a while then cut out. It did used to tick over OK but it's got worse.

Any suggestions would be very very welcome indeed! Is this a common problem? Should I fit an electric pump?

And finally, pushing my luck here but any pointers to a good supplier of parts for these? Many thanks in advance :) Cheers, Roger

Welcome aboard Roger, I'm pretty sure most members will have been off drinking and making merry over the xmas period and like me are just starting to remember their 'electronic' friends so I hope this makes up for the tardy response.:o

If the bits under the bonnet all look OK, it could be the fuel tank air bleed is blocked.

I used to have a Daimler V8 2.5 (Mk2 Jag shape) which would run perfectly around town but would cough and splutter at motorway speeds. One day I pulled into a garage for fuel and could hear the tank unbuckling! Thefar end of the air inlet pipe from the filler neck was blocked with mud. A quick clear and all was well.

You were spot on, only just read the reply., but that's exactly what it was. Car starts, runs fine etc. with the filler cap off :) I was so lucky the tank didn't implode! But thanks again for the advice, well spotted.

No probs. Welcome to the forums.

Good call Stratman - actually caused the new tank on my MGB to buckle on the drive to fill it up properly after fitting it. The lockable filler cap I'd been using wasn't vented, and with no rust holes in the top the the tank any more to vent it I generated a decent vaccum. I got a big whoosh and poping sound as the bottom of the tank fell down when I removed the filler cap. Had to remove the filler neck and push is out properly with a broom handle later!!
