New project converting my 300CE to a 300CE-24

Ady have you seen this post on th e190 forum http://www.mercedes190.co.uk/
its underTECHNICAL--engine,gearbox,diff and exhaust---engine--started my engine swop. Its about puting a 320 6 into a 190. A very neat job, but I particularly liked the way the guy said "the wiring"--my dad did it.;) Still a beautiful job. Take a look when you have a minute. Your making good progress yourself keep up the good work.

Hi Graeme
No I hadn't seen that-that is a very tidy job indeed, the benifits of having a nice big garage to work in I guess.:) Rather than working in the rain..:o

Do I need a viscous Fan by the way Or is the Electric fans ok? because I was having a look at the new engine, it looks like there was a viscous Fan fitted but has been snapped off. I drove the car home some 200 miles and didn't notice it getting hot, its just thinking about it I dont think I have seen one of these older Engines Without a viscous fan. If anything they have both types are the electric ones just for aircon??

As far as I know they have a viscous fan fitted as standard and the electric fans are added for airconditioning. Chances are that the electric fans would suffice knowing Mercedes "overengineering" of that era. My only reservation would be that their control circuitry might be designed for them to act as auxilliary "add ons" relying on the viscous fan for "PRIMARY" cooling so you might have think about that. Will the one of your 300 engine fit since I see a viscous coupling in the first pics? the coupling is the expensive bit the plastic fan isnt expensive. heres the reference to the SACHS ONLINE CATALOGUE.

Yes I have a coupling and fan but the problem is, It looks like a bolt is snapped off on the 24v engine..
I will investigate further when I get home..
Thanks

I wouldn't be too bothered about the viscous fan, in fact I'd ditch it. I once drove a Vauxhall magnum for a whole Summer with no fan at all due to the fan blades breaking and I converted a Landy from fixed fan to electric with no problems at all.

Recent mercs have done away with the viscous fan on economy grounds.

Brief update

Well the project is pretty much finished as far as the Engine goes, it is booked in for an MOT tomorrow.. so fingers crossed..

I did fit a viscous Fan in the end and I fitted my Dials..

I will update again with pics and a more detailed post, because my broardband provider at home has gone bust.. and we wont have it again for a couple of weeks..

Finally back on line at home

Ok back online :bannana: and have brought a new camera so will have loads more pics soon..:)
The car flew though its mot except 1 lower ball joint, so I have been driving it a little but I need to do the head gasket soon :(. That will be in the new year now and I will be selling all my cars around march time to buy a CLK 430 I think..:)
So if anyone wants a golf cab, SEC or the CE let me know ;) or if anyone has a 430 for under 10K :D

Merry Christmas Everyone.

Adrian

I thought I had better update this thread, its been a while and I cant remember what I have done so might not be in order but I have now fitted the four pot callipers big grooved discs and green stuff pads.

I got some lower Sportline springs from Eibach :bannana: I have fitted the front ones along with a thicker anti roll bar and sportline bottom arms but one failed the MOT so that was £220 from MB as there is no pattern part for the sportline arm...

I have not had a chance to do the back yet so that’s this weekends job hopefully, as I have got it booked in to Taunton MB next week for tracking and Camber because its miles out and one of my arches is rubbing  its that bad. The reason its going to MB is I cant get any local place to do it, need special tools mate  more like cant be ar$ed so another £120 :(

Callipers before rubbing down and painting...

And after lots of rubbing down and painting with High impact heat resistant paint in plain silver..:)

And Big shiny discs with Green Stuff pads..

In this one you can see my new springs, Mmm Eibach...

I will take some more pics of the arms and suspension, hopefully at the weekend...

Thanks for looking, there is more to come I am just sorting through pics...:)

Hi Ady,

Those discs are on fire !! Where'd you get them and how much did they cost ?

Hi Howard
Cheers they were about £220 with the pads they are EBC Turbo grooved discs. I still have my old discs (EBC) and some green stuff pads that have done about 100 miles for the 2 pot callipers if your interested I will put in the classifieds soon.

EDIT:- I got them through my mate who runs 2 A1 motor stores.

Ha Ha ..... I wouldn't know how to fit them , they might look nice on my coffee table though .....

Saving up at the moment for the rear wheel bearings ....

I have obviously welded the front panel back in rubbed down and painted, got some cans colour matched, for the panel cost £9.80 for a 400ml can which I thought was pretty good.

Here are a couple of pics more to follow of it finished I just haven't taken any yet..

The panel welded and primed ready for colour match..

Before
merc_front_h-1.jpg

After, basically its just a normal grill colour coded ;)

Can't remember what it looked like before ?

Its looking good mate!

Not long to go till its done by the looks of it.

How could I forget I have also just had a full stainless Exhaust system fitted with a twin Remus box  Thanks too Aka$h...
Oh and no CAT :D

Ignor the crack it will be getting sorted...:)

I will add some pics of it underneath when I get it up on the ramps, while its still shiny :)

I have been driving the car everyday this year without any real problems about 30 miles a day. Apart from the tracking and camber that will be sorted next week. I am going to refit the Air injection pump though beacause it is running very rich and when I nail it, it back fires and holds back only at about 5000-5500rpm, makes it tricky over taking even slow lorrys etc. thats all I can think of at the mo...

I will let you know how that goes, Thanks again for looking :bannana:

Thanks for the ongoing update Ady, it's looking good.

I do have a question though; is there, or have you noticed any major improvement in performance with the 24 valve jobbie?

Thanks, Bill. ;)

Cheers Bill
I can tell there is more power there but it really isn't running right yet as I said, running very rich and one of the front wheels is rubbing:eek: . The wheels seem to spin alot easier though

I will let you know when I get to the bottom of it. I will be doing the head gasket before long too, so I will polish the head and have it skimmed, I am going to do some G-Tech runs soon too..:) the Exhaust definatly made a small difference..

Update

Just to let you all know whats happening, the car is now at Mr Walkers...:)

Ian is doing a fair bit of work for me, I am having the 24Valve Diff fitted after it has been cleaned & painted red, along with a new powder coated subframe in the same colour as the car

The rear Eibach spings fitted with sportine anti rollbars, a full top end rebuild and hopefully having the head polished...:bannana:

I think thats everthing, oh and another gearbox fitted as mine is cr@p, Ian is going to be taking some pics along the way and posting some updates here...;)

So a big Thankyou to Ian
