In response to a question regarding rain sensitive wipers, Gary350 commented that "You need to talk nicely to your local dealer (if you did not get it as an option) he can by using his magic computor activate the sensor fitted to all R171s."

Is this the same for the remote operation of the roof for which MB are asking £90? ie. is it simply an enable/disable setting within the computer?

I ask as I'm about to order an SLK200K but I'm not so keen on spending £90 if all it needs is a friendly MB mechanic to tweak the software!!

Does anyone have this option fitted? If so, is it worth it? The demonstrator seemed to require the key to be within about 12" of the door handle to opearte the roof! If that's the norm, what's the point?

Very much appreciate any advice as I'm getting close to writing the cheque!!

Many thanks
Roger

i have the remote roof open /close system on key fob its ok but you must remember it works on IR so if you dont point it at drivers door the opening/closing action of the roof stops and an alarm sounds, this is to prevent people opening the roof and something or someone getting injured by the roof action because its IR not radiowave you have to look at what is happening. range is not fantastic around 3/8m so its not quit as good as the option might sound. hope this helps, by the way the slk is a great car hope when you get it your happy !!!!! all the best :D

If it's the same as the system fitted to the CLK then yes you do need the key close to the handle as it only operates through infrared rather than RF. Mine wont work further than 3 ft from the car and you have to keep your finger on the button all the time it's closing. So I would say no, it isn't worth £90 - I've used it once and that was just to demonstrate to a friend who has an Astra Cab that can put it's roof up with one touch while he's in the house!

I am not being cheeky, just trying to offer another point of view.

Mine view is, come on, you are buying a brand new Mercedes and quibbling over £90.

For the sake of having the option for definate, the moment you pick the car up and its functionality officially covered by your warranty as it is officially on your options list, I think £90 is a price you are silly to try and beat.

Oh I fully agree Graham and certainly not offended, it's just frustrating when you're spending £90 for key roof remote and another £90 on rain sensitive wipers for what amounts to absolutely nothing if the functionality really is already fitted as standard and just needs to be activated!

The reverse of your argument surely applies to MB also. I don't mind paying extra for something tangible but effectively MB are de-activating options that are already fitted and exist on the car for the sake of £90. Surely we should be levelling the criticism at MB for being tight?

Having said all that, my (or should I say, my wife's!) preferred list of options already comes to nigh on 10 grand so it'll not make much difference to the end price and I agree with your point regarding warranty - more a question of principle I guess.

Any other comments on good/bad option choices very welcome.

Thanks
Roger

Sure. I didn't really think about the rights and wrongs of it on MB's part. I agree it is a bit off as it's already there - like my £40 cruise control stalk - I am sure cruise was originally a more expensive option than that!

I was only commenting what I would do in a real world situation where we cannot actually do anything about what MB charge for.

I think we agree on the principles!

Perhaps my free will to spend is also why I cannot afford a new car :o
