NEW smart fortwo..

But that was a major part of the appeal of the old Smart. What other diesel automatic city cars are there?

They made it in a diesel? lol

The petrol models I drove were RUINED by that gearbox.

The last generation of Smart Diesel had a whole 54Bhp. :D

Mine is quite spritely though and happily cruises at 80 and with a prevailing wind will indicate 95.

It has a 16 second 0-60 which sounds a lot worse than it is when you are behind the wheel.

The benefit is that I get almost 80mpg brim to brim, day in, day out on my west London stop start commute and I don't have to use a clutch in bumper to bumper traffic. I'm not sure if there's another car on the market than matches this.

I had a Fiat 126 which was a hoot to drive and pretty quick away from the lights - that had an official 0-60 of 48 secs!

i was seriously looking fwd to the new smart.

i am very dissapointed, it is damn ugly in many many ways..

love our mk2.. and thinking may get another mk2 now while i can

this really looks wrong in so many ways

and some of the concepts looked very sexy, very appealing ya know

i dare not even put the full pic up..

I agree. They have done a "Mini" job on it and ruined it completely. The ForFour doesn't even have proper opening rear windows. What a shame.

I've been looking a bit closer at these and in the right colour combination the ForTwo doesn't look as bad as I first thought. The ForFor I'm still really not sure of.

What does sound interesting though is that they are making a 89bhp version even on release with a hot Brabus version at 110bhp+to follow....

On paper this sounds interesting. Imagine something the size of a shoebox, that weighs next to nothing, with 100+BHP, a good manual gearbox, improved suspension, a tiny turning circle and REAR WHEEL DRIVE.

It *should* be an absolute hoot to drive.

They have pre-production examples of the new Smart at Brooklands at the moment.

I took the opportunity of taking a couple of pictures and have a proper look at them.

The For Two model is actually pretty nice in the flesh but I think some colours suit it much better than others. Its stance is a fair bit wider (looks like the same dimensions as an IQ) and cabin space gets a big improvement. The interior is very modern and funky and looks like a nice place to be, especially for a car in this segment. My current For Two lease is up for renewal in November and I may well chop it in for the new For Two if I like the way it drives.

The For Four just looks a bit drab. It looks like a cross between a mini and dare I say it, a Daewoo Matiz. Whilst it may be more practical, I strongly suspect it wont have the same following as the For Two.

I think it looks great... mated with a normal 5 speed manual that will be a perfect city car...

Might not appeal to us but they will sell loads I think.

Interesting about the crash testing, bearing in mind earlier comments.

Trouble is the biggest increase in crashes is rear end crashes; not surprising with all the distractions from latest electronics included in dashboards.

We had a Mondeo crash into (a small Peugeot I think) in Reading last year,
and the small car immediately burst into flames and the two occupants were toasted alive.

The new Renault Twingo? Same engines, boxed and floorpans, I understand.

That review on the Twingo is a bit disappointing.

Only 40mpg from a tiny little 1L car?

What is the point of a small city car if it is uses more fuel than bigger, more powerful cars?

City driving? 40mpg for stop start driving is pretty reasonable.

Its not reasonable when you can get better mpg in a barge of a S60 Volvo 2.4L thats ten years its senior.

Its also not reasonable compared to my current smart that gets double that day in, day out.

I only get 38 or so out of my Smart MHDs. I'm on my 3rd one now and they're all the same.

Has to be said that I do not drive it like a normal person would, so I'm actually amazed I get 38.

My next one is due in March/April next year so should be the new model. I'm quite looking forward to it.

Its supposed to be a small frugal city car.

If you only get 38mpg, why do you keep buying one?

I get 70+mpg in my Smart CDI and its the frugality of it that makes it a shrewd purchase. Without this it doesn't make much sense to me.

You can get the outgoing smart on a 3 year lease for £79 a month but be quick.
