Sorry about that, people don't like it when I speak the truth, but that's it.

Another members car fuel log over 30 fills.

Red C220 CDI Sport Estate (Mercedes C220) | Fuelly

That's ok, I'm not one of those! I'm sure I've seen members on here with figures in the late 40's-early 50's? Some even getting early 60's on a run. I appreciate that mpg is one if those things that is going to wary wildly depending on who you ask as there are so many factors that come in to play e.g. driving style, road conditions, type of journey etc. Was looking for a middle ground though but I guess I have to wait and see - I've only done 100 miles in mine so very early days.

Stepping out of a 1 Series BM (which I have often looked at BTW:ban: because of their fuel consumption which compared to a Mercedes is positively freaky) you will feel the pinch at the pumps.

On the up side you have style, comfort, grace and so much more space. As I have said before (having a pop at the 3 Series really) If you want to be seen getting there drive a BMW if you have arrived - then drive a Mercedes.

Enjoy your motor and we look forward to your MPG figures. Commuting and stuff 40 will be good once the engine is bedded in - 40+ on a run.

Must admit a 15mpg drop is a bit more than anticipated! Think I'll be happy if it settles at mid 40's which would be about 85% of official combined figures - should be achievable!

That said everything else (and I mean everything, even driving dynamics) feels like an improvement over the BM and more than makes up for the shortcomings in mpg.

To be fair I no longer do any economical driving. All my driving now tends to be local short trips or stop start in traffic when in London as I now work from home and have no commute whatsoever.

So overall I've pretty happy with circa 40mpg. I've never owned anything before that's managed more than 29mpg average so this is a vast improvement.

Suggesting my average is representative of the norm is not the case.

Welcome to the club. Loads of people coming from BMW to Mercedes and not being disappointed is a good thing. I have to say I was a little worried as I loved my 1 series but the c class is a very good car.

In some ways it feels a bit silly focussing on mpg, having faced a list price of £35k+ and an initial depreciation of probably £6k/yr. Not too concerned about this though as I plan to keep the car for a while. Using man maths I'm spreading the cost over ten years. :)

Thanks fella, wind of change! As you know from my thread on the BabyBMW forum I did consider the 3-series too but the E9x model wouldn't have felt like much of a change as the interior is very similar to the 1er.

The new 3-series estate is nice but a bit out of my price range - what I love about this one is that most of the stuff I wanted came as standard!

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Almost two weeks in now, and I'm growing to like it more and more each day. I had to go back to the dealership for a scratch on the roof that I hadn't noticed when taking delivery (it was throwing it down for the following three days) and they were really good about it. They tried T-cutting it out, which certainly improved matters, but asked me to bring it back to have it properly seen to. Had a loan car for the day, a C220 CDI Saloon AMG, and I couldn't half tell the difference - so missed my car! It amazes me how quickly you get used to a car. I noticed all the subtle differences (apart from the obvious - not being an estate!) such as the indicator and cruise control stalks having swapped places, the seats, the ok-but-not-great engine. It also seemed a lot coarser and noisier than mine too so I wonder if they've improved sound deadening too on the 2013 MY models? Loan car was completely FOC which was refreshing - coming from a BMW I fully expected them to charge me £20-30!

Oh, and I've already had a flat tyre, going over a nasty pot hole. Will submit a claim to the council over it when I get round to it. Tyre fitters could scarcely believe it when they made a note of the mileage (149).

My BiL has just arrived for his pre Crimbo visit in his BMW120D. Going to have a cabby in that at some time today. Best test drives ever are not from a garage!!

Glad your motor is growing on you.

Let me know what you think of the BM - they are quite different cars to Mercs! Is it a facelift model (2007 -onwards)? They are better on fuel and ever so slightly nippier.

Good choice of car!! I'm pleased to say, esp. Tonight, that I do have heated seats!! I've said it before, but I think it bears repetition as its relevant here...coming from a number of 3 series of various flavours, I've noticed that the Merc is much more sensitive to usage. The BM's would only vary be 3 or 4 mpg whether I was round town or cruising the m-way. The Merc drops a lot more under stop start short journey usage, and does a lot better when cruising. 7700 mls in I'm sitting at 38 average - about 70% of that being short journeys.

Interesting point. I used to get pretty good returns in my 120d, usually around mid 50's. that said, it was a manual so not really a fair comparison and I know for a fact that the automatic would be a long way from those figures.

I'm getting quite encouraging returns for saying I'm still on my first tank - currently averaging 40mpg and the last few days my 20 mile commute in to work have been in the mid 40's.

I'm thinking late 40's shouldn't be impossible after this winter as i) the engine will have loosened up with a few thousand miles on the clock and ii) warmer weather usually means better fuel economy.

All that being said, if fuel economy were my top priority I probably should have picked the C220 CDI in manual guise instead! As mentioned before, I tried one (although auto) and my initial thought was that it could do with a bit more grunt :)

Filled her up for the first time yesterday, got 500 miles out of the tank. Put just over 60 litres in so make that about 38mpg. Not great, but could have been worse I suppose. The OBC displayed an average of 39mpg so not far out!

Just a quick update - I've recently seen some incredible improvements mpg wise. On a couple of occasions, I've managed 53-54mpg on my daily commute. I put this down to a few things:

i) The engine and drive train are starting to loosen up a bit
ii) The gearbox has adapted to my driving style
iii) My previous car had a manual gearbox and I've adapted my driving style to suit the character of this car

Really pleased and I certainly wasn't expecting to see such a vast improvement on the initial figures! So impressed with this car - we've also been on a couple of trips where having an estate car has been crucial what with all the paraphernalia that goes with having two children.

All I would say is that room in the back seats isn't as generous as one might think, and a rear-facing baby seat is a very snug fit. I'm 6ft tall and the baby seat only just slots in with the drivers seat kept in original position. I also find that my two-year old keeps kicking the back of the passenger seat so need to find a solution for that e.g. some kind of protective curtain.

Tell it not to and if that fails.

What you have is a compact estate, an X Type, A4, BMW 3 series segment. I'm afraid they aren't very big.

Great twin turbo engine though.

Yes but what about the mess it would make in the back...I think I'll just take his shoes off instead.

Apparently they are supposed to be one of the biggest in its segment, if not the biggest. I think once she's old enough to sit faced forward it'll be perfect. Wouldn't want an E-class just yet :)

Not updated this thread for a while so here goes. I've now done just over 4k miles and this morning a worthy upgrade was fitted - a Becker Sat Nav unit! Car feels more complete for it. I had previously wondered why the functionality of the two screens (dash and binnacle) were so similar but it now makes complete sense, being able to display a full map on one screen and control music etc on the other.

I think my next Merc would have to be a six-pot. I'm well past my days as a boy racer and mostly I like to waft, but the gruff nature of this engine is actually putting me off putting my foot down in low gear (2nd/3rd). I've not had the opportunity of trying a C350 CDI but I imagine that they are much more refined. This is not putting me off ownership, far from it. It's something two aspire to, that's all.

Whenever I see one of these on the road I can't help but stare. I just love the low and wide design of the front-end and how the Xenon lights add to their road presence. I'll openly admit that the main reason for picking this car was its looks. The fact that it is rather practical to boot is a big bonus. Speaking of boots, I initially thought of the automatic boot as a bit gimmickey but I have used it loads. So useful when you've got your hands full of shopping, or when the back of the car is grubby and you don't really want to touch it :)

Did anyone else receive an email from MB Finance the other day, regarding options at the end of your finance agreement? Was a bit shocked, but they did email me again apologising as these emails had gone out in error to some customers :)
