I contemplated a 330d touring too but decided I wanted a complete change, coming from a 120d. The new 3 had just been released at the time but to spec it up to the same level as the Merc (auto 'box, ILS, sat nav etc) meant it was in a different price bracket altogether.

I've never regretted my choice and I still love walking up to this car and getting in it. As for the new C - I love the interior but externally it doesn't do enough for me. I think I'll end up keeping this car for a long time, probably up to ten years!

Re sat nav - I bought my Becker unit on eBay (brand new) and I think it was just over £200.

Are you over on BabyBMW by the way, I think I recognise your user name!?

Just needed to document this - 68.9 mpg on my daily commute. I find such returns remarkable for a car weighing a not insignificant 1675kg(?), fitted with an automatic gearbox, engine performance of 200+ bhp/500Nm of torques and fat shoes to boot.

That said, the cold seasons await - I expect a drop of up to 20 mpg.

Hey edstorm76,

I know this is going back a while.

I purchased this a few months back - 62 Plate C250cdi AMG Sport Plus.

And have been reading through tons of posts and pages of information to finally come across someone that experienced or displayed a similar issue I was having.

I was going to PM you but sadly don't have the post count to 30 yet.

Getting to the point a forum member posted this about a year ago.

"There are a few posts 10 or so pages back discussing how the average minute by minute consumption graph in the centre display maxes out at 50mpg. Although some owners are able to see data up to 80mpg.

Does anyone know if there is a SW update from MB available which improves the data displayed for imperial users?"

Yes, mine got sorted on Monday. The car went in for its first service last week and I asked the technician to check it out. I was the first to bring it up apparently, which I find a bit surprising. Anyway, the initial update didn't cure it so I had to take it back on Monday after the technician had consulted MB UK. Perhaps most folk don't really pay much attention to this graph? OCD feature, maybe.

Now this really bothers me and I have tried bringing this up with Mercedes Benz dealers a few times and havent had much luck. Could you possibly tell me which dealership you used? As well as do you have any more information as to how they resolved the issue?

The worst part is I have had 2 Merc rental cars during the ownership of my Merc and all of them seem to have gone above the 50mpg. For me regardless if the figures are relistic or not it really bugs me. And I always said there is something not correct as it seems the software it self seems to be limiting the bar/chart.

If you could possibly PM or post back as it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Regards
Gio

Just a side note I have never seen 68.9 mpg in mine and its already on 16k miles :( In town I see 31-32mpg. Open road best I have got is 46mpg which is way off the 53.3 combi or even the 61.4 xtra urban rated. This is not based on the DIS this is from fill up to fill up then calculating it after. That said the weather has taken a drop in temp. Which I have read alot that the fuel consumption takes a massive knock on these vehicles.

Hi Gio,
Yes my dealership did manage to sort it. Assuming your issue is the same as mine i.e. average fuel consumption bars on dashboard screen not displaying mpg >50, applying the correct software update should cure it.

I don't have specific details about the update unfortunately but ask your dealership to get in touch with Mercedes-Benz Loughborough for details - happy for you to quote them my reg FL62 NYP.

The problem, as I understand it, is to do with the software conversion formula applied to convert l/100 km into the mpg equivalent. The instant mpg readout (in binnacle) still has this problem - I did ask at the time (about a year ago now) but there wasn't a software update available at the time. Will ask again as mine is due for a service in about 20 says - will report back.

Re mpg - I've not been able to achieve 68.9 since the post above but I regularly hit low 60's. So much depends on volumes of traffic though, I try to set off for work as early as possible to get ahead. If I hit traffic, I'd be looking at low 40's as opposed to low 60's.

And you are right, lower figures are to be expected as outside temperatures start to drop. It is also worth noting that I started to get really good returns following last winter, the car had done around 18-19k miles at the time - hopefully yours will pick up too.

Hope this helps. How are you finding your car apart from this little niggle? I'm still very happy with mine two years on - it's such a compelling package, in terms of styling, perceived build quality, practically, levels of equipment as well as total cost of ownership.

Hey Edstorm76,

I actually typed you a very informative reply to your post. But sadly this website well lets just say has its own flaws.

I went to post the reply and it asked me to sign in which I did and then cleared my entire document I typed.

So I am not going to be typing it again.

Is there a possibility you could mail me direct some contact details - [email protected]

Or just drop me a pm with your email and ill send my contact details.

As mentioned above I cant really be bothered to retype everything again.

Thou I will say thanks again for the information you supplied.

So today she went in for her B1 service. I had been quoted £497 which apparently included brake fluid (needs doing every 2 years apparently). I thought it sounded rather steep. Since last year they stopped providing loan cars FOC, now charging £50 for the privilege. So I promptly get in touch with my trusted salesman. I had ferreted out that he had recently taken delivery of a new C class estate and so I thought it a brilliant opportunity to have a cheeky test drive. Picked it up this morning, it was a 220CDI Sport so nothing too exciting, but I will sum up my initial thoughts nevertheless.

Positives

- Steers very nicely. Not too bothered about the artificial weighting, but it does go wherever you point it in a very direct manner.
- It's light and nimble. I couldn't believe the difference in feel compared to mine, especially when throwing it around tight corners at low speeds. Great fun to drive.
- It rides beautifully. The suspension (steel, not Airmatic) soaked up bumps and ruts with ease. The comparison to mine is unfair though, as the Sport rides on 17" wheels and I think the suspension is softer than mine too.
- It's quiet and refined. The engine note is markedly quieter than mine. Mine is the 250CDI which does run a bit harsher than the 220 as it's in a higher state of tune, but even so I could scarcely believe the car was fitted with the same engine as mine.
- The interior. Nice. I think. Hmm. I am still undecided about the whole package, and I'll list my reasons below.

Negatives

- As mentioned, this was the Sport, which IMHO looks a bit basic. I reserve judgment until I've seen the AMG line.
- The interior. It's trying to hard in places. The touchpad is a good example - there's really no need for it and I ended up using the rotary wheel as it works very well. A simple action such as adjusting the volume can be done I three different ways; by using the control near the rotary wheel, by the centre dash or by using the steering wheel controls. It's confusing and again there is no need for it. Toggling between the different drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+ etc.) can also be done in three different ways. It actually stressed me out a bit - I doubt they've studied Feng Shui, let's put it that way. It actually felt good to get back in my own car. Maybe I'd get used to it though - I think maybe it's because it's such a complete change that it needs a bit of time/bedding in
- You can't reverse with the door open, as it shifts to neutral automatically. Not that I do very often, but it's an odd feature nevertheless.

Ok I'll leave it there. Now for some items I listed for the dealership to look at whilst the car underwent its B service, along with outcome:

- Alloys: pitting. Outcome: four new alloys on order, to be replaced under warranty, FOC!
- Seats (Alcantara/Artico): salt marks. Outcome: new seat covers on order, to be replaced under warranty, FOC!
- Off-side windscreen surround (plastic trim), the clear coat has lifted near the bottom. Outcome: pictures sent off to Mercedes-Benz head office, decision to be taken as to appropriate action.
- Climate control display, nick in bottom left corner (internal). Outcome: pictures sent off to Mercedes-Benz head office, decision to be taken as to appropriate action.
- Key fob, sometimes won't lock the car. Outcome: batteries replaced (chargeable item). Still seems to play up a bit so will mention again. Spare key absolutely fine.
- Binnacle mpg bar, won't go above 40mpg. Outcome: an update was available for this issue, however this has been withdrawn, possibly due to issues.
- Gearbox jerking when coming to a halt. Outcome: software update applied, will test and report back
- Offside windscreen wiper 'jumping'. Outcome: wiper blade needs replacing, however this was chargeable so left it for now. It is worth noting that I had the exact same issue this time last year, for which they actually replaced the wiper blades FOC.

All in all a good outcome I thought. The car needs two new rear tyres and the brake pads are 75% worn and no doubt the rotors will need replacing too - I'm probably looking at a bill of north of £1k. How's that for a reason to place an order for a new C-class estate and just chopping mine in? Proper man maths! :)

Oh, and the B service came to £430.55.

Big day today, she's been treated to four brand new alloys and new passenger + drivers seats covers FOC!

She needed new rear tyres anyway so that saved me a few quid for swapping the tyres over. I went for Dunlop Sport Maxx RT's as I've heard some good things about them and various sites rate them highly.

Initial impression is that the car seems much quieter, to which obviously having more tread will be a contributing and factor, but the tyres have received top marks for noise levels too.

They've also replaced FOC the offside windscreen trim as some of the clear coat had started to come away (only a tiny bit, about the size of a 50p coin).

Not decided but I might treat her further, to a full wheel alignment/tracking. I reckon that would be prudent, given the work done. Opinions welcome!

Hi just been reading back through this and how do you find the economy if you use the car around town?

I have just ordered a C250 CDI Coupe and i mainly drive around town sometimes in congestion but obviously start stop will assist then but form reading your earlier posts you were getting around 39 and this is the same as my Kuga atm and thats only 140ps and 320nm so same economy from a car that weighs same and is much more powerful doesnt seem too bad
