New winter tyres review...

Pleased to see that the continentals I have waiting in my garage have come top trumps on the tyre test again ;) .

Not trying to knock Continental here honestly but taking a quick look at prices on My Tyres for 225/45r17 I found for V rated

Conti Wintercontact TS830p= £186

FALKEN HS-439 £108

KUMHO KW27 £108

VREDESTEIN WINTRAC EXTREME £158

So going by price the Contintental is approx 80% better than Kumho or Falken and 17% better than Vredestein WINTRAC Extreme tyres in the snow?:dk:

Unfortunately the reality for most folks is getting their hands on 4 winter tyres when they need them so quite often this means taking what's available at the time.

ps no mention of the excellent KLEBER range either ??

I needed 245/40/17s for the rear of the SLK. £122 each fitted for the kumhos or £197 + fitting for dunlops. Nothing else available. There was a similar difference for the narrower front ones. It would have been about the same to get new 16 inch wheels with tyres but I already had a spare set of 17 inch wheels.

My rears are the same size, I just went for 225/45x17 on the rear to match the fronts. (Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes)

I only paid mytyres £156 each (delivery only) a year ago for the contis.

No ad in my copy but there is for Vredestein.
Just this week sourced winter tyres for the SLK. It was unusable in the snow last year and I have a spare set of wheels. Could only find 2 types in the right sizes Kumho at £438 fitted or Dunlop at £720 + fitting. The car does very few miles but is vital for my wife's work in the NHS. Went with the Kumhos on the basis that they may not be the greatest winter tyres they will be vastly better than the summer tyres were last year.
Interestingly the CLK was fine last year running on the same size summer tyres.

I had the Kumho's on my CLK500 last winter and they were superb.

I meant to add that I have staggered wheels but also fitted 225/45/17 all round the main benefit of which is tyre rotation :)

Those who have opted for Kumho winter tyres will be reassured by your experience Moonloops.
Perhaps it supports the theory that ANY winter tyre is going to be better than a summer tyre, and will impress the driver.
I think surveys are useful to someone researching a market, but they do tend to do tests in artificial and extreme conditions and their subsequent grading can give a misleading impression.
The fact that Kumho came last does not make it a bad winter tyre. It means it may be about 10 per cent less efficient than the best. Is that bad? :dk:
On balance, if it is a toss up between a car mag survey and personal experience, then I will generally prefer people's real-world experience (which is why this forum is so useful!!!...:thumb:)

yep, the thing is winter tyres don't enable you to hoon around like Lewis Hamilton in cold or snowing conditions.

You are meant to drive carefully on them in snow allowing you plenty of extra traction over summer tyres.

If you are driving near to the limits of any winter tyre on snow you should stay at home IMHO

The kumho's made less noise than Michelin pilot sports which was bizarre (maybe due to softer compound)
