Nice 'cheap' SL for Summer

Lovely looking thing, especially with the Gen2 AMG kit, which the dealer has failed to pick up on...

Just dont like the AMG replica alloys...

That is gorgeous. I mean really really gorgeous.
I saw an R plate one in silver for £6k near me yesterday. Cheap as chips. Rainy summer coming?

I always worry about 320s and the head gasket issue....should I? I'm in the market for an SL of about this value, but wonder whether a 500 would be better. I know they are similar mpg and the 500 is faster etc, but there are so many more 320 available...I'm confused of what to do!

320 a nice engine, cheaper to repair than a v8 (bulletproof they are of course).
Just budget for a CHG and a 'loom if needed.
SL's tend to get looked after, well, the later ones, chances are those issues might have been done already, just check.

That's beatiful, a really nice spec too. Good find, ticks almost all the boxes for me!

I like the colour.

As mentioned, despite what the ad. says the wheels are not AMG.

Xenon headlights aren't original as they weren't available on a '96 car. Ditto the rear lights - those are '99 facelift clusters. Maybe it's been 'upgraded', or maybe it's had front / rear damage. The n/s headlight wiper is also a bit crooked.

Looks like the radio aerial has died and rather than fixing it they've added another (non-retracting) on on the offside rear wing.

Don't like the badging ... just says "SL".

Auxiliary heating? I don't think so.

Missing 5 services.

ESP? This wasn't even available as an option on the 320.

Wood/leather wheel doesn't match the interior.

Strange no pics of the hard top.

I think that second aerial is for a missing carphone kit, although you rarely see them that big. I can just about make out a speaker in the passenger footwell.

However, it's still not a patch on my yuppiemobile :D

I thought that second aerial looked too big for a phone one, but could be I guess. Mine is on the top of the windscreen.

And the standard aerial doesn't look right, like there's no mast there?

It's rare to see them that big, but if the post is threaded you can screw a bigger mast on, might give you a little help in marginal signal areas.

I've still got that pair on the rear wings, I will be getting rid of them soon!

Wow, totally chav-tastic, that awful colour wouldn't look out of place on that TV show The only way is Essex ;)

SL's don't seem to making the money right now. I've got mine on Pistonheads, and it's one of the sensibly priced ones, yet there's not been the greatest interest in it.

It's a shame as these cars are well worth the money.

I am looking for one at the moment as a present to myself (bought an SL500 when my daughter was born, sold it because it was not being used and now plan to do the same with the little guy due next month...go figure!) and I too noticed that the R129's are not moving at all.

I think part of it is the R230's falling like stones in the asking price. They may have a range of issues, especially with the early ones, but the retractable hardtop makes a huge amount of sense and a lot more practical.

Depends what you are using the car for really. The R129's boot is a lot more practical than the R230's. Then you have the rear seats; even if you don't use them for kids they are handy for coats etc.

I had originally planned to 'upgrade' to a 230 but now I think I will hang on to the 129.

Yep, as long as you don't want to put anything in it when the roof is down...

I think the R129s hold their age better than the R230s. The classic, timeless styling of Mercedes got a little lost in the new millenium. Thankfully, it's back on track now though.
