Was just reading the description from Dryce on the E-Class thread about the SBC, and when he mentions that most people don't even know about it.

I know that when we got our Merc, it was all the nice little touches that excited me most about the car :D lol.

I'm talking not about the things that get mentioned, heated seats, comand, cruise etc, more about the things that don't get mentioned, but are great when you find out about them.

For example, silly things like the back wiper comes on when you reverse and the intermittent wipers stop when the car pulls up to a stop.

As we only have a 'lowly' C-Class , I was wondering what other things are out there on other Mercs such as SBC that would never really get a mention in a spec write up when your'e buying a car, but are great to have.

The one feature that I wasn't really sure that my car had until I got it was a heated steering wheel, made such a great difference in the recent cold snap that we had.

I also find the way that the passenger wing mirror drops to show the kerb when you select reverse a very useful feaure.

Another feature that is more posey than anything else, is the way that you can open and close the windows / sunroof by pointing th ekep at the drivers door handle.

couple of SLK related things i liked.

The R170 had a coin holder (no good for £1) behind the ashtray cover. You had to pull it back and it revealed itself.

The ambient lighting on the R171, when driving at night, use to light up the reflective strips on trainers in the footwell. I suppose some would think that could be distracting, but I liked the way it took the darkness out of the car when in unlit areas.

The thing I miss most from them, is the speed that the heater started getting warm air. This car takes several miles to get warm air, and the higher the fan speed in cold weather, from starting, the longer it takes. The Mercs, had warmish air coming through very quickly.

And the airscarf worked with the roof up too. That made cold days really pleasant.

An interesting thing that I never used, or felt needed u til I moved here, was the little button that knocked off the alarm sensor for movement when the car was locked.

You would be amazed how many beemers horns start blaring on the ferry trips I make. Never see a Merc alram going. Well thought out device that.

I like how the wipers stop if you open the door; so that you don't get splashed.
I like having gas lifts for the bonnet
The 3-flash function on indicators is useful

The speed limiter. I miss it every time i drive my BMW :(

-Turn on the child lock and the lights on the rear window switches go off.

-Pull the grey switch outwards on a W202 boot trip switch, and it turns off the bootlight if your leaving it open for a while.

-Interior lights go off if you lock the car with them left on (after 10mins or so)

-The little cage to hold the petrol cap when filling up

As we only have a 'lowly' C-Class
Our even more lowly Vito has various things too

'One touch' starting (where you only have to momentarily turn the key to 'start').
Rear wiper coming on when you select reverse and it's raining.
'Fade up/down' interior lighting.
Auto up and down on the electric windows.
'3 flash' on the indicators.
Coin holder in the glove box.
Holder for the 12V socket plug (dummy cigarette lighter) when it's out of the socket.
Brake assist.

Probably think of some more in a minute!

I reckon i have used it twice in around 8 years , i dont see the point when you have cruise control anyway

speed cameras.

It allows you to drive as normal, but just prevents you exceeding whatever speed limit you set.

Almost invaulable in stop start, or rush hour traffic, when you get a clear bit for a while.

Distronic cruise may have a similar effect, but ordinary cruise control just keeps you at a set speed. or you twiddle a bit. With the speed limit set, you drive as normal, but no flashes.

well I liked it anyway.:D

Mine has to be the electric sliding seat and steering wheel in my C55. When i put the key in seat slides forward and steering wheel moves to my perfect driving position, then does the opposite when i remove the key. Memory seats at a nice classy touch.

Before the Saab I had a W203 and I was amazed by how much I missed the little extra's, in addition to those mentioned;

- Exterior Lights that 'welcome' you to the car
- Auto door locking
- Mirrors that fold on lock
- Passenger seat belt reminder (when seat had shopping on it)
- Even the rear headrest folding switch!

All the little touches that made me feel 'special'

BTW - where is the switch for the heated steering wheel on the E-Class??

I've used it once, and haven't bothered since. Made overtaking a pain, you had to use 'kickdown' over ride it or turn it off for a gentle overtake.

Cruise control is easier and more controllable, I find.

The limiter is an absolute godsent - especially nowadays with so many 'average speed camera' zones around.
I would not like to be without it and find it invaluable.
Of course it's use is different to cruise control , which has it's place too. Use of each has it's own benefit dependent on situation.

I suspect the speed limiter is of more use if you have COMAND ... which can't warn of Gatsos. I've never used it, not even once.

why do these threads always turn into a cruise vs limiter debate

Hardly a debate, more a sharing of experiences:)

Be a pretty boring place if everybody always agreed, every thread would have 4 posts.. the original followed by by 3 I agrees....

BTW - where is the switch for the heated steering wheel on the E-Class??

On a stalk that controls the movement of the electric steering columb.

its on the end , twist to activate it.

Ive not had it on a mercedes , but i did however like it when i had it on my X5 :)

BTW - where is the switch for the heated steering wheel on the E-Class??

I don't think that it is a standard feature, the switch is on the end of the electric steering wheel control stalk, you twist the stalk to turn the heater on.
