Nice Little Extras.....

I don't think that it is a standard feature, the switch is on the end of the electric steering wheel control stalk, you twist the stalk to turn the heater on.

its £204 option from the factory

Hardly a debate, more a sharing of experiences:)

Be a pretty boring place if everybody always agreed, every thread would have 4 posts.. the original followed by by 3 I agrees....

And that's just what I could be bothered to link to, from a single thread :D

The forum is full of certain amusing topics which continually rear their heads; the cruise vs limiter debate being but one.

Oh well, perhaps I am grumpy

speed limiter useful in those average speed camera stretches on the M1 (about 20 miles long at the moment!)

why do these threads always turn into a cruise vs limiter debate

Not a debate but a discussion on what is a useful little extra , i dont personally dont find the limiter useful but cruise i find essential

Memory seats is a nice extra

The speed limiter. I miss it every time i drive my BMW :(

speed cameras.

It allows you to drive as normal, but just prevents you exceeding whatever speed limit you set.

Almost invaulable in stop start, or rush hour traffic, when you get a clear bit for a while.

Distronic cruise may have a similar effect, but ordinary cruise control just keeps you at a set speed. or you twiddle a bit. With the speed limit set, you drive as normal, but no flashes.

well I liked it anyway.:D

The limiter is an absolute godsent - especially nowadays with so many 'average speed camera' zones around.
I would not like to be without it and find it invaluable.
Of course it's use is different to cruise control , which has it's place too. Use of each has it's own benefit dependent on situation.

Couldn't agree more -- use it all the time -- should be mandatory on all cars...................................even Mondeos..:D

VW's have a speed warning, which you can set in a similar way to Mercedes speed limit, but all it does is bong and put up a speed warning.

Our latest transit does the same, its more a nuisance than anything else. I never set it, but i suspect, like the heated windscreen issue, that the speed limit device is subject to some patent to prevent others having it.

Can't remember the proper name for it, but the ability to keep the car warm using residual engine heat when the engine is off, and even when the car is locked and empty.

Really useful when you're waiting in the car for someone or want to keep the car warm while you, e.g., go into a shop for a few minutes.

Many if not most of the items mentioned by other posters are indeed 'nice little extras' but the exist on other makes of car. Not aware of the residual heat function being available on any other make.

Having said that I'm sure there will be someone with more knowledge along in a minute.

Auto wipers are cool.

The way the air-con boosts the output when you open a door..

Voice command of sat-nav and telephone...

The way the front interior lights fade out when you open the rear doors...

How the cornering lights swap in when reverse...

The holder for the fuel cap when filling up...

The way the xenons "dance" when switched on (ok not useful but cool :) )

Auto-folding mirrors, you can check the car is locked from across the car park...

How when the parking sensor segments go red you stil have room to open the tailgate

Pressing recirc closes all the windows, then opens them to the same position on the second press.

....... Now that is just my pet hate - No variable intermittent!! What were Mercedes thinking off?! Either fit auto-wipers across the board, or give us variable intermittent!

Is this just on the thermotronic?

Mercedes-benz cars have always been full of clever little features :

Separate left and right heaters ( my 1957 Ponton has this feature , I think the earlier 170 models had it , certainly every model since has it ) allowing 'her ladyship' in the passenger side to sit in a sauna whilst you keep your cool ( or vice versa ) , actually I think it allows something like 3 deg differential .

Anti-dazzle 'dippable' rear view mirror ( Ponton series onwards - possibly earlier ) .

Crumple zone/passenger safety cell/ burst proof door locks ( Ponton series onwards )

On earlier models ( Adenauer , Ponton , Fintail ) when you held the headlamp flasher switch down (some models had a separate position for this , in which the switch would latch ) the full beam would flash continuously = 'Big Merc coming : Get out of the way ! ' this was useful on the Autobahns in the old days when you were sharing the roads with 31bhp VW Beetles etc .

Geared quarterlights ( Fintail , pre-facelift W114/115 'New Generation' ) where you could open the quarterlights a precise amount and you could leave the car safe in the knowledge they could not be forced further open from outside , short of breaking the glass .

Sun visors which can be unclipped at the inside hinge and turned sideways to combat strong sunlight glaring in through the side window ( Fintail series onwards ) .

Separate cold air vents ( W108 , 'New Generation' onwards ) allowing a driver to stay alert on a long journey whilst keeping the car warm .

Probably dozens of other nice little things if I took the time to think about it .

Not sure SBC is something to heap praise on. MB dropped it from the model range bar the SL IIRC as it was too problematic and expensive.

I don't think I've ever used cruise or a limiter on any of my cars - that's what your right foot and concentration is for .

I use cruise on long journeys where there's little other traffic to worry about : long night motorway journeys or some of the A roads in the Highlands at night where you know you can maintain a constant speed for lengthy periods .

It is more relaxing not having to keep the right foot in a constant position for a while . However I never use it on roads where there is a lot of other traffic .

The residual heat is another feature i rarely use , the one and only time i've found it useful is when i deliver the christmas cards locally and keep leaving the car

When we go dog training in the evenings the kids often stay in the Vito, so the residual heating mode is a real plus in cold weather.

No, it's with both aircon controllers. Press and hold and open windows close :)
