Mine's a 5sp auto with 107000 on the clock. All fwd gears are fine and I've only had the car a month. I've only reversed at slow speeds and so haven't noticed this problem until now. Reverse works at a creeping pace on level ground. However, giving it throttle just revs the engine with juddering and it won't reverse any quicker. I couldn't reverse over a speed bump. I also tried to reverse up a hill and the car just slowly rolls downhill. I've read some other posts and this could be a case of an ATF and some minor parts changes but it could also be big problems.

What do other readers think is going on with this.

First check the fluid level, after that it needs a proper look at.

This could be the KS clutch leaky or the gasket on the intermediate plate damaged.

This does mean that the rear section of the box has to be removed.

I'll check the fluid level and see what happens next

I checked the ATF with the engine at operating temp. The fluid is light to clear and came half way between the top arrow and the curves in the stick. ATF definately not low, but is it too high? There are some specialists in the area. Does anyone have any experience of gearbox repairers in the Exeter area? Thanks in advance

Checked the ATF (properly this time; d'oh!) and it's half full. In any event it's booked in to be checked and I'll report on the result for other members.

Fingers crossed!

:( Arrgh! Clutch packs for 4th and reverse gone. Needs a new gearbox. I'm putting a second hand one in. Arrgh! Exeter Gearbox Centre were good, by the way. Cheers!

How many miles does it have?
