No power E320 CDI (W210)

more updates

I have now arranged to take my car into the garage on 20th. They have another cdi with the same loss of powere issue and its diagnostics (but not mine) showed a problem with the MAF sensor and the high pressure fuel pump. So I am to get replacements for both of these!! I will let you know if this solves my difficulties.

more updates 2

I hope it is useful to have these updates.

Took car into the garage today. They in fact did not replace the fule pump and MAF sensor as planned but instead, got advice from MB that cars within a certain engine no range (inclufing mine) need to have a modified turbocharger fitted. So it seems MB are now recognising the problem and doing something about it.

Anyway, the car is to go in yet again next week. Sure glad it is under warrantee! I will let you know how that goes.

Good to see that they are sorting it mate. Did tell you they are complicated, and even MB Dealer don't know it all.

Do you have any more details of the problem or solution Simon? Only I have the same problem with mine.

Problem/solution?

Richard,

What now seems to be coming through is that MB has found a problem with the Turbo charger on certain models and are offering a modified charger. (I do not know the technical nature of this problem) My car was bought in Feb/Mar 2003 (E270 cdi) so if yours was bought about the same time I assume the engine number will be close and could therefore have the same problem.

I suggest you ask your dealer to check with MB direct as the advice came from them. They could call my garage to get more details. It is MB Orpington. Tel 01689 888400. Ask for Jon Anderson.

Hope this is useful. But beware, I have not had the turbo replced yet, next week, so I cannot guarantee that everything will then be OK!

Cheers

I purchased my 1st ever Merc, after listening to my old man how ultra reliable they are......Having driven the car for just over 7 months, i have encountered several minor problems with my 1998 C180 Sport.

The problem i have with it at the moment is....... i was driving along the M62 over the weekend and i noticed lack in power (especially up hill), the car was struggling to gain speed above 60mph even after knocking it down a gear. I've booked the car in for a service cos i checked the spark plugs and they didn't look too healthy.......

Can anyone help me? Will a service solve the problem? I've been told it could be a number of problems:
- Spark Plugs / Leads
- Fuel filter
- Something to do with the ECU

If anyone has got any other suggestions or have experienced similar problems as above please can you e-mail me.

[email protected]

Thanks.

Ah! the first rule of mercedes ownership - fining out that they are not as reliable as you think they are

how come they hold the value i am thinking of changing my c220 cdi to a ???? what is the best merc diesel

The turbos are not boosting when under load. This can only be down to the waste gate sticking open or the variable vanes sticking in one position. In reality not difficult to sort but no-one seems to have a clue as soon as the words "diesel" and "turbocharger" are mentioned.

A star machine is no good here, a boost guage will tell the whole story though.

Look on Ebay for the "faulty" turbos coming up for auction.

Last update?!

I hope this is the last time I have to comment on this issue.

I had a new, modified turbocharger fitted last week and since then have made 2 journeys of more that 160 miles. I had no recurrance of the loss of power problem. So with a certain amount of hesitancy I think the problem is now solved. Seems MB are promoting the turbocharger change as the way to solve this type of issue, at least for the relevant car models and ages. Good luck to others who experience the same.

I finally took my car into the garage today. I booked it in for a B Service 6 weeks ago (this was the earliest date they could give me a C class coutesy car). I've just had a call saying they have found the fault with it loosing power and the car needs a new Turbo unit. I pointed out I told them that when I booked it in but he just went quiet! Hopefully this will solve it.

Thats worrying as mine is Jan 2003, but with only 21k on the clock? :( :(

Brian,
I was at the dealers last week and they have had several problems with the turbos in the 270 cdi but none in the 320 cdi, maybe we are safe :D

Had exactly the same on my old G-class
Took it into Lucas service, and the guy said that it was air getting into the fuel pipes (have to say I was a bit sceptical). He replaced the pipe, and the problem was cured. The old bus seemed to run better too.

I tend to agree. Air getting into the fuel lines, allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank. Happened on mine too. Tends to be worse if you park with the car pointing uphill!

Cost of sensor

If the MAF sensor is the air mass sensor, mine cost £220 to replace.

Yup! Mass Air Flow sensor.

You won't do that again. Live and learn. ;)

Chris that's what this forums all about. Helping each other have quality motoring at an affordable price.

no power

I have recently had the same problem
On motorway, up hill, gradually slowed down, revs stuck below 3000.
Taking to mbz monday.
Am told AMS
Is this the default response?

2001 E220TCDI Limp Mode

Dave K said:
UPDATE : It's fixed. New electro-plate in the gearbox along with new fluid and filter. £470. I thought the gear changes were smooth before this problem occured. They are soooooo much smoother now :)

I just had exactly the same problem. Intermittent going into limp mode, brought on by slow traffic, crawling along. The car gives a jolt on changing down gear (I think 2nd to 1st) and then is in limp mode. The tiptronic then does not have any effect. Stop the engine and restart and the car is ok again until the next crawling traffic jam. This happened to me on holiday in Italy last week, the car drove home with no problem at all, but then needed a new battery on the evening of the return, it seems the journey fried it. I got the battery changed £20 for electric test + £20 for battery test + £107 for battery plus vat. I hoped this sorted the limp mode too, but alas it recurred yesterday. New electro plate gear oil and filter today for £620, so fingers crossed it's sorted. Otherwise MB are advising it's a new gearbox for £2200. Thanks for all the great posts on this issue, it helped set my expectations!:o
