Nokia 6310i/ Bluetooth

My father recently bought a 2004 W220 S320 cdi. It has phone kit installed for Nokia 6310i and links to COMAND, steering wheel controls, etc. Everything works fine with the 6310i in the cradle.

However, his everyday mobile phone is a Motorola RAZR and he would like some form of bluetooth solution which would link to COMAND, etc. Unfortunately, I don't believe the phone kit is UHI (cradle is part number A2208201251, perhaps someone can confirm) so he cannot just slot in the bluetooth puck. Can anyone suggest a solution? I don't think he would be keen to take the car apart to install UHI, even if this would work.

There must be a large population of Mercedes out there with 6310i kits installed. Surely someone has come up with the answer.

Many thanks in advance.

He can have the UHI upgrade installed in 3 hours and only minimal to trivial dismantling. Seems to me that will be the safest path for the Mercedes Bluetooth add-on.

Thanks for reply. Sounds interesting. What parts would we have to source (I have already sourced parts for my own W208 CLK from Steve at MBenzNL)? I presume the cradle and PSE would have to be replaced but would it also be necessary to run a new loom?

I believe the parts list is as follows.

- new armrest insert (last of the Nokia plastic panels new)
- contact plate for UHI
- spacer plastic
- 2 screws and nut to hold spacer
- 1 cable retainer clip for underside of insert
- new PSE
- UHI cradle

This is the part that needs working out
--------------------------------------
- mini-UHF to SMB adaptation (either on body harness, converter plug or on contact plate)
- RJ48 to 10 pin adaptation (the body harness needs to be made compatible with 10 pin plug used in UHI system)

I also use these parts
-------------------------------------
- 2003 CL W215 armrest cables (these have updates connectors on both ends - since I like to crimp and modify the body harness join in the air vent area

The simplest thing would be to have a modified UHI contact plate with the old type connectors fitted. Only MBENZNL sells that type of part.

Here's one I prepared earlier

Notice where I used some felt tape and a hole die to make a matching plug for the two holes that I just couldnt hide.

This is what a modified cable looks like (from a W203 but same idea). The parts on the right side were added and those are the type for UHI. You can use a short adapter cable or modify either end.

Thanks again. I will see if he can be convinced.

Miro, I have been informed by Scorchie (a while ago) that 2004 W220 S-classes and 2004 W215 CLs can't be upgraded to UHI (or MHI)... at least, not the US specs.

Not sure if there will be the same issues with the Euro specs, but from what I understood from Scorchie is that the audio system in the 2004 S and CL differ from the newer 2005 and up models. Which makes it difficult - if not impossible - to upgrade to UHI.

Do you know anything about that?

greetingz,

BigSis

Hi BigSis,

I was able to upgrade this car myself after some careful programming and it can only be done with Star Diagnose.

I spoke to your brother on how i did this work and as far as I know the Siemens COMAND with MOST optical can be upgraded after the hardware is installed.

I only did this on the Euro version. My engineers tells me that the Siemens is more capable than the Becker technology.

These are the photos of the CL / S upgrade I did. Looks OEM ! :)

The hardware doesnt take long at all. The software takes about 25 minutes to upload.

Since the mounting plate inside the rear seat (in both cars) doesnt prewire for UHI you have to also install linguatronic at the same time. Otherwise its a real pain porting microphone wires across. Then when all of the wiring is sorted out there are not enough holes to screw down the UHI module to the Nokia metal panel.

Either install a newer UHI metal panel to support the UHI module or drill a new hole in the Nokia panel and fasten.

There is no crimping or wiring changes in the armrest. It is all just replacement parts. There is one special place in the armrest plastic where some plastic must be removed and the line is already molded into the part itself. A sharp knife will make a clean grommet hole.

The differences in the Nokia MOST version and the UHI MOST version of the head unit is to do with language problems in the COMAND itself. The Nokia head unit does not understand UHI and that can be fixed quite easily by someone with experience and patience.

With so many Nokia 6310i kits installed in MB vehicles in Europe and elsewhere, I find it surprising that MB (or someone else) did not come up with a bluetooth cradle adapter, similar to that in the USA for the MB/ Motorola V60 (see www.wireless4mb.com).

Yee of little faith !

Miro, not pointing any fingers at you! Especially given the advice you have offered. And I am certain that your solution is an excellent one. What I mean is a "plugin" option (for the less technically capable of us) similar to the V60 bluetooth puck which would work with the PSE for the 6310i and original cradle, and integrate with COMAND, etc. Wouldn't you agree that there is a market for such a device?

By the end of the year all these issues will be resolved. Pray harder !

Hmmm, tantalising. Official Secrets Act? Or can you tell more?

i have just started to change my nokia 6310i kit for UHI in my 2003 211. have changed the armrest internals/ mini uhf ect. fitted new pse under rear floor etc. my 1 remaining problem is with the audio 20, apparentley the early audio 20 only speaks Nokia language. is it possible to change the software in the audio 20 for the UHI software? or is it going to be a replacement later unit.
i am sure some of you experts will be able to point me in the right direction thanks in advance.
