Non Merc V-belt question.

Well this morning I replaced the Viscous Fan. I happened to have a brand new unit that was donated to me from a chap on the Pajero Owners Club.

This was a really, really fun job to do. I am unsure whether removing all the skin from the back of my hands, or wedging my arm up to my chin in the engine bay, was the most fun, or discovering that the mounting boss holes in the new unit were a slightly (not visible) off-set to the existing unit. This of course could not be seen until I had removed the old unit. So new holes drilled (using the old as a pattern) and the new unit is now fitted, with even more skin being removed from my other hand. I also managed to donate some sacrificial 10mm flange nuts into the engine bay, where they will never be seen again. It is not by chance that I keep a bag of stainless 10, flange nuts in my garage.

Did it stop the noise??????? In a word........... NO.

In another word ********.

It does seem to be less frequent, but it is there, taunting me, laughing at my efforts to stop it, mocking me at every lift of the throttle.

I have toyed with the idea of setting fire to the truck, or driving it into a nearby quarry, whilst shouting "squeak now you bar steward".

The alternative is to replace the belts. That is all? that is left to replace.

Just a thought. I assume there is nothing that can resonate against the body/chassis when on the overrun? eg exhaust.
My merc makes strange noises that have been diagnosed as worn engine mounts.
Maybe something similar could be causing your issue?
I think you said it rarely does it when stood still, so no loading when revving. When on overrun with the weight of the vehicle, something could be moving far enough?

Like I said. Just a thought.

Just had a new exhaust fitted (not for this issue) with no change to the noise.

I like your thinking. But it really does sound front end belt squeal or pulley.

I would try running without a belt. But I fear causing damage as it won't do it until hot and moving.

I can remove the AC belt so may try that.

Bruce, start her and when it makes the noise spray water in and around the suspected area - repeat.

John I did try this with little success. The issue is that there is so little room to gain access anywhere. Even to spray a water mist. The only ancillary left is the AC compressor but that is bottom left (NS). As Ted says belts on these are a known issue if not OEM. It's a challenge now. I have replaced everything bar the belts and PS pulley. My big fear is that the "new" water pump is the culprit. That was replaced last year when we did the head gaskets & Cam Belt.

The viscous was pretty well seized so not a bad thing to do it anyway.

Ah, I understand Bruce. Maybe take the belts off and refit them in reverse as I suggested previously. If that cures it even for a short period you bet on belt/s being the issue.

John

Reversing the belts seems like a great idea. For the cost of new ones and keeping what's left of my knuckles and skin intact, I may opt for doing it once and fitting new ones.

Don't give up Bruce! :)

Guys

I haven't fixed it. Yet.

Took a day away from it today. Went out in it tonight. Switched off the A/C front & rear. No noise. Wtf? I am sure I tried this previously. But I drove it for 30 minutes and tried in vain to make the noise. Nothing.

So I am now thinking it's the AC compressor/pulley or clutch. I am thinking compressor as the AC when off the pulley will still turn but the clutch will stop the compressor?

Is this smart thinking?
